❤️A Message for Young Choreographers & Teachers

One of the greatest gifts I ever received growing up was from my teacher, Nancy.
She didn’t just teach me steps — she opened the entire dance world to me.
She took me to New York, encouraged me to train in Canada, and brought me to every dance convention she could. That exposure shaped everything about who I became as a dancer, a teacher, and a choreographer.

And after 40+ years in this industry, I still make it a priority to keep learning.
There are so many opportunities now — online ballet classes, virtual workshops, and incredible training at your fingertips. There’s no excuse not to continue growing.

For years, Gerrianne and I took the train to New York every few weeks — leave in the morning, take five or six straight hours of classes, then take the train home that night. We did that for many, many years, and those trips made us who we are. That level of dedication matters. It shows up in your choreography, your eye, your technique, and your ability to help dancers grow safely and beautifully.

To the young choreographers coming up in this industry:
⭐ Get into class.
⭐ Take ballet consistently.
⭐ Go to conventions.
⭐ Keep training — even when you start teaching.
⭐ Stay open to corrections from those who have walked this path for decades.

Fresh ideas are wonderful.
But the foundation comes from training, humility, and a willingness to learn.

Your dancers deserve the very best version of you — the one who’s committed, curious, and constantly growing.

I gave a few compliments in class this week to my students who always show up, because showing up matters more than they even realize. Dance has a way of shaping you from the inside out, and for me, discipline was the foundation of everything I achieved. It wasn’t the trophies or the big moments that made the difference. It was the quiet choices, like never missing class even after long competition weekends or on days I didn’t feel 100 percent. I kept showing up because I believed in the long-term purpose, not the short-term comfort. Looking back, talent helped, but it was my discipline and commitment that carried me to every success.

This 6-week online experience is designed for dancers who want to build confidence, focus, and belief as they head into competition season. Through guided conversations, reflection, and mindset coaching, dancers will gain insight and tools to help them grow both on and off the stage. Limited to a small group to keep it personal, supportive, and impactful.

I’m also deeply thankful for my family and friends, for their love and support through every season of life. Being close to the people who lift me, challenge me, and believe in me is something I never take for granted.

And to everyone who has supported my work, shared kind words, trusted me with their dancers, or simply believed in what I do, thank you. My heart is full.

I’ve been so moved by all the private messages and excitement surrounding my new book. The support has been incredible, and it reminds me how far this message can reach, beyond one class, one studio, or even dance alone.
