It’s More Than 8 Minutes.

As the season begins to come to a close, I find myself looking at these two pictures. Both of a sunset. One of the show coming to a close and another of an empty band lot. Two pictures that tell a much bigger story.

The Warsaw Marching Tiger Pride began their journey three months ago to turn the concept of drill and music on paper into the marching band show it is today. I would roughly estimate that these students have dedicated at least 300 hours to that mission of perfecting an eight-minute show. Band camp, rehearsals, football games, competitions, and countless hours of repetition.

But it’s more than 8 minutes.

Sure, they learned more about movement and music. They worked to grow their craft and abilities as musicians. But they learned far more than that.

They learned about grit and resilience. They learned to push hard, and when they thought they couldn’t push any further, they learned how to push just that much more.

They learned about teamwork. They learned that the band can only be as strong as its weakest member. They learned to depend on one another, support one another, and hold each other accountable.

They became a team. Through all of this time together, they became a family.

They learned to problem solve. They learned how to overcome stress, anxiety, and challenges. They learned to push themselves physically and mentally. They learned that when you put in the work, you can create something spectacular.

It’s more than 8 minutes.

In the coming months, the music and drill from The Golden Spike will become a memory. The props will be put away, and the band lot will sit empty. But the skills these students have learned will be part of them forever. The friendships they have formed may last a lifetime.

Simply put, we are proud of you.

Your hard work and determination have allowed you to create something special. I hope you see that. I hope you recognize what you have accomplished. I hope you heard it from the stands when the crowd cheered. You have given us so much to be proud of.

To the bigger band community, it’s more than 8 minutes for you, too.

I think of the countless hours dedicated to building props, feeding the students, preparing uniforms, chaperoning buses, taking pictures, and pushing props and pit equipment all over creation. I think of the parents, volunteers, directors, and staff who have given so much of their time to make all of this possible.

All of the hours dedicated to simply supporting these students are difficult to quantify for an eight-minute show. And yet, week after week, so many people show up and give their time because they believe in these students and what this experience means to them.

It’s more than eight minutes.

As we prepare for our final performance of The Golden Spike at the ISSMA Scholastic Class A State Finals this weekend, I hope everyone takes a moment to appreciate what has been accomplished.

Of course, we want to do well. We want these students to walk off that field knowing they gave their very best. But regardless of what happens on Saturday, there is so much more to celebrate than a score or placement.

Years from now, these students may not remember every note they played or every step they marched. But I hope they remember the lessons they learned, the friendships they made, and what it felt like to be part of something bigger than themselves.

To our students, directors, staff, parents, and volunteers, thank you for everything you have given to make this season what it has been.

It’s more than 8 minutes. It always has been.

Sincerely,
A Proud Band Parent

Oh no, they stopped the song before we could get the number! Why do they always do that?
