Reading is such a critical skill in our society! Did you know that 65% of fourth grade students in the United States a proficient level? (https://nces.ed.gov/programs/coe/pdf/coe_cnb.pdf)?!?!

So, how can we solve this problem? By putting books in the hands of children from an early age. Not just books we think are good for them, but books that THEY choose, that THEY want to read! Whether we are reading too them, with them, or letting them read, we are continuing to decrease that literacy gap for children. FRESH - Fauquier Reaches for Excellence in School Health does that and cannot achieve their mission without our help!

A last week ago, I joined in on Let’s Volunteer week with the PATH Foundation and organized a book drive for . FRESH has a mission to promote movement, healthy eating, and LITERACY in our county through events throughout our community. At every event, the provide FREE books to children in our community to help increase access to the written word. All the books they give out are collected through donations, and my goal is to help further their efforts to get quality reading material in the hands of children! Last summer alone, the gave out 3, 365 books alone!

I first found out about the program from partnering with some of their summer events when it was run by Books on the Bus - BOB in their very first season. I would bring instruments for children to explore and run music classes to encourage children to engage in community music making (another passion of mine😉). I fell in love with the organization and the people who run it (Kristen McAuliffe is an amazing and passionate leader!).

I realized this past week that I am in a unique position to do even more through my Usborne Books & More business, so I have decided to organize a book drive to help raise even more books for this wonderful cause. I am hoping to raise $500 to buy new books to be given out during their events at their events this year. If you are able, please consider donating to help children in Fauquier county have access good literature. Let’s invest in the futures of the children on our county! Usborne will match donations at 50% over $250, so every dollar helps me get to our goal!
