What's your favorite memory of Field Studies Share in the comments below and make a gift to honor our Head of School, Hank Berg, who is retiring at the end of this academic year:
For Highland students, field studies can be life-changing. Trying new things and getting outside of pre-conceived comfort zones is empowering and inspires connection and confidence in ways that few other activities can.
Throughout his 45-year career, Hank Berg has known this intrinsically. Since 2006, field studies trips have encouraged, inspired, and tested students across all divisions.
"My best memories are from my sophomore field studies trip with Ms. Krumich," said McKenzie Andrews '22. "My favorite parts were getting to know people in my group that I was not close with until that trip, getting to sleep in a tent with my good friend Abby Soltys, playing games with my group and camp leaders, and going hiking in the rain. It was a lot more fun than it sounds!"
Help us honor Mr. Berg and support field studies for the next generation of Highland students by making your gift at the link below:
It's ! You've seen our emails with alumni stories of their fondest field studies memories. Here's your chance to support experiential education as we look toward Mr. Berg's retirement at the end of the 20232024 academic year.

For this year's , we've been sharing stories of our alumni's field studies memories as we prepare for Hank Berg's retirement at the end of the 2023/2024 academic year. Throughout the course of his 45-year career, outdoor education has been at the core of his educational philosophy and Highland students have reaped the benefits.
“I’ll never forget when I had my birthday out in the woods on sophomore Field Studies and my friends made me a cake,” said Philip Mulford '15. "I think it was just Nutella and tortillas… but maybe they smuggled in some sprinkles for it, too. Whatever we were eating, I just remember that moment was so funny and sweet.”
