Jenna Devanney '18 sent in this photo all the way from Iceland! After attending our Young Alumni Panel in early January, where she talked about her experiences going to college abroad in Ireland, Jenna flew back to Europe to continue her research.

Jenna is currently writing a dissertation on the cooling period in ancient Ireland that may have been caused by an Icelandic volcano, so part of her research included spelunking in Arnaker lava tube!

Thanks for the photo, Jenna, and good luck on your dissertation!

What's your favorite memory of Field Studies Share in the comments below and make a gift to honor our Head of School, Hank Berg, who is retiring at the end of this academic year:

https://www.highlandschool.org/support/make-your-gift-online

For Highland students, field studies can be life-changing. Trying new things and getting outside of pre-conceived comfort zones is empowering and inspires connection and confidence in ways that few other activities can.

Throughout his 45-year career, Hank Berg has known this intrinsically. Since 2006, field studies trips have encouraged, inspired, and tested students across all divisions.

"My best memories are from my sophomore field studies trip with Ms. Krumich," said McKenzie Andrews '22. "My favorite parts were getting to know people in my group that I was not close with until that trip, getting to sleep in a tent with my good friend Abby Soltys, playing games with my group and camp leaders, and going hiking in the rain. It was a lot more fun than it sounds!"

Help us honor Mr. Berg and support field studies for the next generation of Highland students by making your gift at the link below:

For this year's , we've been sharing stories of our alumni's field studies memories as we prepare for Hank Berg's retirement at the end of the 2023/2024 academic year. Throughout the course of his 45-year career, outdoor education has been at the core of his educational philosophy and Highland students have reaped the benefits.

“I’ll never forget when I had my birthday out in the woods on sophomore Field Studies and my friends made me a cake,” said Philip Mulford '15. "I think it was just Nutella and tortillas… but maybe they smuggled in some sprinkles for it, too. Whatever we were eating, I just remember that moment was so funny and sweet.”

Attention all alumni! With a forecast of rain all day on Saturday, October 14, 2023, we have made the difficult decision to cancel our planned Homecoming Day festivities for this weekend. However, we know that the year at Highland simply wouldn’t be the same without this community gathering—especially with it being Mr. Berg’s final year!

With that in mind, mark your calendars now for a SPRING FLING on Friday, May 10, 2024! We’ll bring back our beloved food trucks, inflatables, and varsity sports in the afternoon following our Grandparents Day celebration in the morning. Of course, the day will also include a special “Thank Hank” presentation honoring Mr. Berg for all he’s done for our school over the past 19 years! Stay tuned for a more detailed schedule of events, and in the meantime, enjoy a fun photo of our hawk living it up at last year's Homecoming!
