Romans 15:13

Luke chapters 1 and 2 tell us that Mary said to the angel of the Lord, “may it be unto me as you have said” and that she pondered all of these things that were happening to her in her heart.

Mary suffered greatly. Her heart was pierced through watching her Son betrayed, beaten and crucified. And yet in all of this, she was content to allow God to lead her and content to allow life to unfold the way God saw fit.

Elisabeth Elliot says that she was content to be silent before God.

In Mary’s life, there was a trust, dependence, and obedience to all God allowed in her life.

Being a woman of God, a follower of Christ doesn’t mean we always live a life of answered prayers in the way that we want them answered. But by waking up again in the suffering and offering oneself to obedience to God, even in a horizon that looks empty, and where hearts are still shattered.

And in that life continuing to choose to trust God in all of it. Our circumstances may not change, but God is still asking for our hearts and for us to say - Jesus, help me to live these hours in a way that you would be proud to write your name at the end of this day.

Coming down from the Christmas glow and into ordinary days again. May God meet us right here… in routines, responsibilities, and quiet moments. If you’re feeling the shift too, let this be your prayer today: Lord, renew my strength. Anchor my heart in You and help me step into this new season covered in Your peace.

These things go against our throw-away, live hugely, be into everything society.

Why live a simple lifestyle when you can live boldly and extravagantly.

We once attended a party in a home where the party of about 200 people was set up in the foyer of their home. When the host asked if anyone wanted a tour of the home I was so intrigued and joined them. The family consisted of the mom and dad and two children. The nannies quarters were on the top floor.

My initial thoughts were: oh my goodness what a gorgeous house. But then I started to think about the cost of the heating bill, the electricity? How would four people ever use and enjoy every part of this house?

There is no judgment at all of someone living this extravagantly. If someone has that money and enjoys that lifestyle, more power to them. Truly.

For me, I went back to my home and was overwhelmed with a sense of gratitude for the way that my family chose to live. We used every part of that house, and because of its size we were often right on top of each other. Our kids always wanted more than one TV in the house, but I insisted that we have just one so that we weren’t all spread out in different areas of the house doing our own thing.

I was grateful that I didn’t have to clean and take care of all the things that a huge house would entail. There were times when I was envious of other people’s houses that were bigger, fancier, different than what we chose.

When I had those feelings, I often found myself discontented and irritable. But when I put my mind back on the blessings the Lord so lavishly gave us, my heart would turn back to thanksgiving for what He had provided.

These words paint a cozy, simple, warm picture in my mind. Just reading them warms my heart, puts a smile on my face and makes me yearn for a rainy day by a fireplace with a cup of coffee in my hand, a good book, and a fuzzy blanket; sitting by a fireplace with my loved ones surrounding me. Oh, and our brand new 60 lb two year old dog sitting at my feet.

My heart immediately feels God in the midst of this scene.

We are called to live lives that allow us to breathe and exhale. Lives that wait patiently for Him as we pray, trust and be still in His presence.

In our world of chaos, busyness, and striving we often find ourselves yearning for a day like this. Dreaming of the next time we can take a vacation and have a day where we find ourselves in this dream day.

What so many of us miss is that we can live this simplistic, Godly lifestyle by taking a good hard look at our lives and making decisions toward this life.

Do we need to back out of some activities that we are involved in, w**d out our homes of all the excess that we need to take care of, decide to spend quality time with our families at home and give up racing from practice to games every day and on the weekends?

Where in our lives can we cut back so that our existence on this earth reflects God and not the frantic pace of this world?

The word of God gives us insight into leading a quiet and productive life:

1 Timothy 2:2-4
1 Thessalonians 4: 11-12
Psalm 46:10
Isaiah 30:15

Asking the Holy Spirit to guide us helps us find peace, contentment and joy when we live and love according to God’s precepts.

A dear friend of mine has said that continuous drops of water can etch stone.

Rather than plowing others over with a torrent of doctrine; pouring out to others and allowing others to pour into our hearts; kind words, sitting in silence when lives are broken, celebrating successes; all of these “drips” make a difference, point others to Christ and change lives.

Likewise are decisions to open the word of God everyday, to talk to Him about everything and to listen for His voice allowing Him to continually sanctify us as we obey Him.

Proverbs 25:11 A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in a silver setting.

The prying open of hands. The breaking wide open of hearts.

It’s excruciating, isn’t it.

We ask, “God, why do you allow this” we search for answers sometimes to be met with silence.

We hear quips like: “the teacher is always silent during a test” but those things render our hearts even more broken.

We need to go straight to His words to us.

He is close to to the brokenhearted.

He is making a way in the wilderness, steams in the wasteland.

Sometimes even as a believer, these are hard to trust because we don’t feel them. But better than quips to tie up our shattered lives in a bow, the word of God stands true. They are ancient words that still hold weight as they did back when they were written.

These words straight from Jesus’ heart come alongside His words that say that he will never leave us, nor forsake us, that his ways and thoughts are higher than ours.

Do we trust Him. With ALL of it?

The prying of our hands is so that our hearts will find Him in ways that we never could left to a life of ease. Hold all things lightly and in His sovereign care ❤️

How are you at waiting?

For someone who is a type A, like to be in control person, waiting has always been hard for me.

Over the years, the Lord has put me in excruciating circumstances where I have absolutely no control: like zilch, none, nada.

For me, having no control has been a very scary place to be; since I was a little girl, I had to “ keep things under control” in my life.

In my parenting years and in my early marriage, I found myself parenting out of fear and wanting desperately for my kids to grow up in a safe and secure world, knowing that they were loved beyond measure; however, circumstances in their own lives, took away their safe and secure world. Things that happened to them, that we did not find out about until years later.

As my world crashed in around me and through the help of an incredibly wise counselor, I learned that the control that I thought that I had in my life was actually protection of my heart. A striving to be one step ahead of anything that might happen so that I could protect myself and my family. I learned and am still learning that I cannot protect my family from this world, from things happening to them, from the choices they make and others make that affect them greatly.

I have loved, believed, and served Jesus my whole life, however until circumstances were completely out of my hands, I never learned to trust Him because I always had “backup plans” for how any circumstance could possibly turn out.

Again, as my world crumbled, and as I am still living in the rubble of that crumbling, my faith in Jesus has grown sweeter and deeper as I’ve had to learn to trust Him, (truly trust Him) above all else.

Sometimes that growth has been kicking and screaming, sometimes questioning, oftentimes with sobs racking my body and my heart broken.

But this is what I have learned: any control that I thought had over my life is actually simply perceived control.

As a believer, I am forever and deeply grateful for God’s hand on my life, in every aspect of my life, especially in the times when I cannot understand what He has allowed.

I’ve lived both ways and have found this to be true.

Living a quiet and modest life with my eyes set on Jesus and my heart leaning into Him keeps my feet on solid ground rather than the shifting sand of striving, pursuing, and seeking of things that Jesus may not have for me.

There is a feeling of being more settled and stronger when I know that He is leading me instead of grasping for things that He never intended me to have.

Oh how sweet it is to rest and trust in Jesus. ❤️

Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 tells us that not one thing is wasted in God’s economy. He sees it all, He is over it all. He is never caught off guard.

Every season has its own time. When things seem chaotic and out of control in our own lives, we can rest assured that in Jesus, there is a purpose and time for everything. It seems to us that things are falling apart, but God is not taken by surprise.

Some seasons are made for us to pull back and watch God work; to lean into Him so closely and search for what He has for us in this season of life.

Whatever season you find yourself in at this moment; joy filled, peaceful, excruciating - trust Jesus - you are held, you are safe.

Our actions speak louder than our words ever could no matter how much we protest. We can blame our actions on our past, on circumstances that have devastated us but when do we stand and take responsibility for our actions? It’s easy to blame everything and everyone around us. It takes work to decide to live a Godly, humble, fruitful life. The difference between choosing to live one of these two lives is immeasurable.

We can sweet talk, lie to, convince anyone of anything but it’s what we are actually doing in our private lives that always show the intent of our hearts.

I used to tell my kids that what you sow in private you will reep in public. Every single time.

Whether your life blows up in full display of everyone around you or it’s something that God is convicting you of in private, you will always be exposed when you are not living a truth filled life.

It takes just as much effort to live a life of misdeed than it does to make an honest living: to be a hardworking, life giving, contributing member of society than it does to live a life of stealing from others, of gossiping and tearing down rather than coming alongside others; encouraging, building up and being faithful to God and those around us is how we are called to live.

If we take care of the many blessings and the life God so graciously gives to us - keeping our hearts set on honoring and glorifying Him in every season, being faithful to and loving those in our family and the people surrounding our lives: neighbors, co-workers; taking care of the work He puts our hands to, our homes, living simply and honorably before God and our family then we reflect a life of Jesus guiding us through the turmoil and heartbreaking circumstances of this world.

There are horrible things that happen to us in this life. There are choices that we all make that we will regret. We live in a fallen world and we are not perfect by any means. Those are the places we can confess, we can bring before God and others asking forgiveness, seeking help to overcome the things we struggle with.
