Her article, "Children Are Not Colorblind: How Young Children Learn Race" highlights several studies regarding young children and their understanding of race. We hope it is a support to you as you engage in important conversations with your colleagues about how to teach Racial Justice as part of your Peace curriculum.

Dear fellow Montessorians,

As we have closely followed the protests happening around the world this past week, we are reminded of the role that peace education plays in the Montessori philosophy. Dr. Montessori believed that education was one of the most powerful ways to reconstruct society, but knew it was not an easy feat. In her address "Education and Peace" she stated, "An education capable of saving humanity is no small undertaking, it involves the spiritual development of man, the enhancement of his value as an individual, and the preparation of young people to understand the times in which they live."

Today, we recognize that this work begins with ourselves. While it is heartening to see so many speaking out over the past week, we know that this important work will extend far beyond this week, or this news cycle. All of us at NMI commit ourselves to this work, and extend an invitation to you to engage in this important work with us. In the coming days and weeks, we will be sharing resources for schools, teachers, and families.
