It’s the first Friday of the month, and you know what that means: it’s Fun Fact time! Today, we’re featuring not just one item, but a whole collection. These dolls once belonged to Christine Holman (1865-1954), a teacher here in Warren beginning around 1890. When she wasn’t teaching, Miss Holman was traveling! She spent time in other states, like California, Florida, and Alaska, but she also took an around the world cruise in 1938. She came from a large family and often had one of her sisters accompanying her on her adventures. She collected plenty of curios and souvenirs over the years, many of which are now housed in the Warren Public Library Museum, including her doll collection.
From 1933-1943, after retiring from a 45-year teaching career, she presented a weekly children’s program in the library’s museum space, where she hoped to foster an interest in other cultures and countries and promote a desire in others to travel. Miss Holman continued to present these programs until she was 78 years old! Christine Holman’s contributions to the library, museum, and local community of Warren were widely recognized both then and now. The library’s current staff are happy to continue her legacy of learning and teaching when it comes to the museum. Whether you’re a fan of dolls or not, her collection is worth seeing.
