Why do I put welfare before performance? Because I don’t believe the two are actually separate.

You cannot consistently achieve your horse’s best performance while neglecting the things that allow their body and mind to perform at their best.

Let’s break it down.

Here are just 3 examples

🍏When your horse has consistent access to high quality forage and a diet appropriately formulated to meet their nutritional needs, you are giving their body the resources it needs to work and recover.

Healthy muscles. Strong connective tissues. A functioning digestive system. A body that is actually equipped to do the job we’re asking of it.

📏When a saddle properly accommodates the horse’s withers, spine, shoulders, and back and is correctly balanced, it allows the horse greater freedom of movement.

That means they can use their body more effectively instead of compensating around discomfort or restriction.

🧠When we recognize a horse’s mental load, respect their thresholds, and avoid continually pushing them beyond what they can process, we aren’t making them “soft.”

We’re teaching them how to regulate, recover, and cope.

We can gradually expand their threshold for stress while giving them the opportunity to come back down and process what they’ve experienced.

And a horse that can regulate, recover, and understand what is being asked of them is ultimately more trainable, more resilient, and more capable of performing.

This is why I put welfare first.

Not instead of performance.

Because it is the foundation of sustainable performance.

At Catalira, the goal isn’t simply to make a horse do more.

It’s to develop a horse who is physically capable, mentally prepared, emotionally regulated, and willing to participate.

Because that’s where I believe truly exceptional performance begins.

You’re allowed to want more.

More for yourself.
More for your horse.
More from your riding.
More from the life you’re building.

And you don’t have to apologize for it.

You don’t have to settle because other people think your dreams are unrealistic.

You don’t have to lower your standards because someone else is willing to take shortcuts.

And you certainly don’t have to rush just because everyone around you seems to be moving faster.

Mary is out of my my who I rescued and fell in love with. But she is by Wild Dance a Grand Prix Dressage stallion that was known to pass on his talent and temperment.

She’s my first homebred, raised here, and becoming exactly the kind of horse I dreamed of producing.

And watching her reminds me:

The dream is worth building.

Even when it takes longer.
Even when nobody else understands it yet.
Even when you have to do things differently.

You can be ambitious and patient.

You can want excellence and prioritize welfare.

You can dream BIG without believing you have to sacrifice what matters to make it happen.

So go after the thing.

Build the horse.
Build the partnership.
Build the business.
Build the life.

And if your vision is bigger than what exists around you right now?

Good.

That means you have something worth building. 🤍

Don’t make your dream smaller just because the path to it is longer than you expected.

Keep your standards high.
Keep your vision higher.
And keep going. ✨

This is the part of training that doesn’t always look impressive

She’s only 2.5. 🤍

And yet she can stand at the mounting block, wait patiently while I get on, move around her, and calmly look to me for affection.

No rushing.
No anxiety.
No “just get on and go.”

Just a young horse who has learned that the mounting block is a safe place, that she can trust her person, and that standing quietly is part of the job.

This is the kind of foundation I believe in.

Because good training isn’t about how much you can get a young horse to do.

It’s about how safely, thoughtfully, and confidently you can teach them to do it.

And sometimes the most impressive thing a young horse can do…

is simply stand there and feel good. 🐴✨

“I only want to ride western because I want to ride one handed”

It seems so simple. And it is. And if you simply prefer the look and feel of a western saddle you are not alone!

But I often hear this from people that simply don’t know what they don’t know. So I say this with love.
Riding one handed is earned. It is a learned skill for both horse and rider.
And no matter the saddle any horse and rider pair should aim to eventually have the skill to ride one handed.

Riding one handed is an illusion (insert funny hand gestures). It looks like that highly skill rider barely moves their hand and the horse just goes where they want.

What you don’t see. But can learn to spot. Is what the rider is doing with their body. The head, eyes, shoulders, abs, back, hips, legs, weight distribution. All of that is used to actually do most of the work. The hand is the LAST 5%.

Then on the horse side of things. They are not born knowing how to neck rein. Just like we aren’t born knowing how to read. (Although that would be nice!📖) They have to be taught. And just like we start with the alphabet, sounds, etc. they have a similar process with learning all the que’s and what they mean and stinging them together. And each student *cough* I mean horse is a little different in how they learn and what their needs are.

Annnnd just like reading neither horse nor rider should skip the fundamental steps in learning how because then if they run into and issue like a word they don’t know then they can figure it out a lot easier!

Below is a rider easily neck reining in an english saddle just to show it shouldn’t matter what gear you use. If the fundamentals are there the skill can be done.

CATALIRA EQUINE. WARREN TX

Over the past 3 years I’ve been building something different...
Something our local community NEEDS….
Something meaningful… impactful..

I don’t just teach people how to ride horses. I teach them how to use their energy and regulate their own emotions. I teach an art form that is becoming lost in the modern age of technology.

I don’t just train horses how to be ridden. I show them how to use their minds and bodies in a way that improves their health long term. I develop them to be willing and happy partners even in high performance jobs.

Because I am so meticulous and put safety and animal welfare first my methods take time but yield much better results than something rushed and because of that I often get overlooked or don’t get booked. And that’s ok. I KNOW I’m doing the right thing. And likeminded people will appreciate it and book me.

Those are the people who believe in what I’m doing! Those people believe in themselves and their horses! They see how much heart and talent our community has and want to be part of the journey to showcase that!

In light of this I want to offer TWO NEW opportunities for likeminded people to build a legacy with me.

🪨CORNERSTONE MEMBERS will have exclusive opportunities to Build a Legacy with me and be part of my journey from the beginning.

Cornerstone Members will get first access to Training, Lessons, Boarding, Special Events, Clinics, Shows, Nutrition, Tack Fitting, Fitness, Wellness, Photo shoots, advertising, marketing, sales, breeding, and more!

Drop a comment if you’re wanting to be added to our waiting list to for when I have all the information sorted out for Cornerstone members to join!

I hope you all are having a great day and I want to thank you for taking the time to read this far and follow me on this adventure!

Young Mary coming along 👏

Starting any horse, but especially young horses is such a critical point in their journey. It lays the foundation for years to come. It’s a delicate balancing act of giving grace and having tact. But also showing them new things are fun and not at all scary. It’s about building their confidence in YOU as their leader. And in THEMSELVES as being capable of getting the right answers.

Starting under saddle shouldn’t be scary. It should be confidence building.

That’s what I have to offer your horse. Confidence, trust, and leadership. No drama, minimal stress, and loads of personalized support.
