These two kindergarteners are learning to spell words by counting the sounds they hear and building each word with cubes before writing it! 🧊🔤

This hands-on, visual strategy helps them connect sounds to letters and reminds them not to leave out any sounds in a blend. We’re building strong spelling skills one sound at a time! ❤️📚

🍂🎃 We had SO much fun at our very first Fall Fun Day at Stewart’s Little Learners! ❤️ From sack races and badminton to bouncing in the bouncy house, playing with Play-Doh, and building sandcastles, there was something for everyone! 🏸🏰🎨

Seeing the kids laughing, playing, and making memories together made it all worthwhile! 🥰 And guess what? We get to do it all over again TOMORROW! 🎉🍁 We can’t wait for another day filled with fun, laughter, and making special memories with our Little Learners! ❤️

What Is Structured Literacy?

You may have heard the phrase Structured Literacy.

So what does it mean?

Structured Literacy explicitly teaches the structure of spoken and written language.

Instruction is:

🔹 Explicit
🔹 Systematic
🔹 Cumulative
🔹 Diagnostic and responsive

And it integrates important areas of literacy such as:

🔹 Speech sounds
🔹 Sound-symbol relationships
🔹 Syllables
🔹 Meaningful word parts
🔹 Vocabulary
🔹 Sentence structure
🔹 Written language
🔹 Comprehension

Structured Literacy isn’t simply “doing more phonics.”

It’s intentionally teaching children how our language works.

Why Are Kids Asked to Read FAKE Words?

Mip.

Lat.

Fep.

Those aren’t words.

So why would we ask a child to read them?

Because nonsense-word reading can help us see whether a child can actually apply their knowledge of letters and sounds to an unfamiliar word.

A child may recognize:

CAT

because they’ve seen CAT hundreds of times.

But what happens when we show them:

LAT?

Now they have to use the code:

/l/ /ă/ /t/

This is one way educators can gather information about a child’s ability to decode rather than relying only on memorized words.

Sometimes fake words tell us something very real about reading.
