Your child may lack motivation for a certain topic because there are some things they don't yet understand.
A way to alleviate this is to encourage them to focus on first doing what they DO know how to do. Start off with what they can do and they'll learn more as they go!
When I studied for the GRE, my students wanted to help me. So I told them I needed to learn new words. And the fastest way for me to learn is to teach!

I stopped by a STEM camp to talk about engineering and all the amazing things I’ve done as an engineer. These kids are learning REAL engineering at a young age. We talked teamwork, forces, structural integrity, designs, etc. We built truss bridges, while the kids next door were putting together a circuit board!

I understand, it is REALLY hard to watch your child get frustrated and beat themselves up after having a hard time understanding their homework.
It is important to let them know that it is OKAY to not understand something at first and feel frustrated.
Then...have them step away from the work causing them frustration for a while by either taking a break or working on something else.
Sometimes, taking a break allows them to calm down and also come back with a fresh perspective.
Negative self talk is counter-productive! Believe me… Just because I'm a tutor does not mean that I have not been frustrated or had a tough time grasping a subject. But, I had to learn how to get through it and I can help your child get through it too.
