Night 4-

The recruits got to see NJSP’s SouthStar helicopter come in and give a quick presentation on what they do within emergency services first thing in the night. Then they went to work practicing their structure fire response for tonight’s competition.
Additionally, they also got to visit with our friends at the Ocean County Fire Marshal’s Office to see two very important roles they take over: investigations with special guest K9 Conrad, and the MAC Unit used to organize and track resources at incidents very large and small!
Thank you to the OCFM for their help!

Night 3:

The recruits got some education in CPR and basic first aid from the Waretown First Aid Squad, boarded the engines to respond into a structure fire, and performed search and rescue operations in the smokehouse.
Additionally, they got an education in fire behavior and observed a live burn in our ‘house’ in preparation for tonight’s fire investigation demonstration.
And congratulations to the three recruits promoted to Captain of their Battalions: Thomas, Anthony, and Hobie!

A few notes:

—Weather is not being kind this week, but we are still a go. Consider a long sleeve shirt or sweatshirt under the academy shirt tonight! The winds are supposed to settle a bit, but the temperature is remaining constant at about 70.

—No helicopter will be coming tonight, so you can arrive at normal time.

—Graduation and competitions will be tomorrow. Recruits arrive at normal time and family is invited to stay. It will start at about 5:40. Competitions will follow and begin at roughly 6:30. The entire night will likely end at about 7:30/8:00.

Thank you!
Brent

Class 8: Night 2

Last night Battalion 1 earned a pennant for winning the challenge on Night 1!
Recruits went to work on their structure fire skills, throwing and climbing ladders, advancing hose lines inside to fight fire, and rescue operations.
At the next station, they honed their suppression skills on a working vehicle fire, and then got to learn and try their hand at forcible entry using the tools to force open two doors.
Lastly, they also saw the skills and presentation of our special guests, New Jersey Forest Fire Service and Forked River FD with their 105’ platform.

Hoping the weather cooperates tonight!

Class 8: Night 1

The recruits for Class 8 got through their orientation to the academy and then were off to the 3 big stops for the night:
— Response, decontamination, and operations from our special guest the Berkeley Emergency Response Team Station 85, the county HazMat Team, who did a great job as always!
— Keeping with the theme of HazMat, the battalions also competed against one another in a team building activity testing their coordination and planning.
— Battalions also got acquainted with the tools and equipment they will work with over the week at the burn building. They got hands-on training in connecting to hydrants, charging hose lines, advancing lines to suppress fire, throwing and climbing ladders, and also searches and radio operations.

We hope everyone enjoyed the first night!

Good evening!
Tomorrow begins Class 8!

Recruits should arrive at the academy (200 Volunteer Way) between 5:15 and 5:25 each night. And they will enter in the large bay door facing the parking lot.
Recruits should bring a small snack for break (please avoid peanut/nut items), and a water bottle (preferably with their name on it).

The night ends at 9:00 pm and recruits will need to be signed out by a parent in order to be dismissed!

Rain and thunderstorms, we can easily work around!
Nature has been fairly kind to us over the years in that respect.
This, though, we’ll carefully watch. I have a lot of contingency plans out there, but we will just hang tight for now.
Stay away, Erin, you never even filled out an application for the JFA.
