HOT AND DRY CONDITIONS: Are you searching for Fall? It's not found. Another overall hot and dry week is on the way. Rainfall chances are going to be limited, and little rain has fallen the last 2 weeks. It almost makes me wonder if we are going to enter back into drought conditions despite El Nino. I will say that if this dry weather continues, we are going to have to be mindful of the Fall fire season incoming. Image 1: This is the official forecast for the week. The coolest night is going to be Tuesday night at 60. However, the day conditions are going to be hot. Mid and upper 80's for the entire forecast period. Low rain chances. 40% chances of rain on Friday and Saturday, and a 50% chance on Sunday. Image 2: This is the ECMWF model for Friday showing chances for showers and thunderstorms. Image 3: This is the GFS model valid on Sunday showing the same thing. Not widespread rain, but isolated showers and thunderstorms. Image 4: Temperatures are going to remain above average as indicated by the red and pink colors. Fall begins the 22nd, but Summer is still holding strong.

WEATHER ALERT: A Flash Flood Warning has been issued until 10:30 pm for North Eastern Buchanan, and North Western McDowell County until 10:30 pm. Image 1 is the watch and warning map as of 8:00 pm. There is also a Flood Watch in the dark green until 1:00 am. Also several flood warnings across the northern part of the state. Image 2: Between 1 and 3 inches of rain has fallen across parts of McDowell County. Some places that will experience flash flooding include Bradshaw, Iaeger, Avondale, Jolo, and Panther. Monitor water levels if you are in this area. Image 3: The radar shows rain lightening up, but thunderstorms are going to continue for at least the next couple of hours. Be safe.

SUMMER HEAT CONTINUES: Happy Monday everybody. I know this weekly report is normally out on Sunday. However, I posted yesterday the Fall 2026 outlook since this is a long weekend. For current weather, the endless Summer heat is going to continue this forecast period. We are moving into Fall, but Summer is going to hang on a while longer. Image 1: This is the official forecast for the week. Dry overall this week. Above average temperatures with highs running in the mid and upper 80's. Our coolest day looks to be Friday with increasing rain chances Thursday into Friday. Image 2: This is the GFS model valid Thursday into Friday showing increasing rain chances and thunderstorm chances. It's not out of the question that there could be stronger thunderstorms at that times. Image 3: This is valid Saturday into Sunday showing isolated thunderstorms, very hit or miss. Only about a 30% chance at this moment. Image 4: Above average temperatures continue this week as indicated by the red and dark red colors. No strong signals anytime soon that this heat is going to break, but it is still Summer until Sept 21. Have a good week.

FALL 2026 OUTLOOK: Given that we are now in Meteorological Fall, and the Fall Equinox is only 16 days away, I figured it was time to start talking about what kind of weather the season may bring. Image 1: A lot of it is going to be driven by El Nino which is abnormal warming of the Equatorial Pacific outlined in black. El Nino is record strong this year with anomalies off the chart of over +5 degrees C. It's actually warmer than that, it's just this scale only goes to +5. It's also notable that the oceans as a whole are running well above average outside the El Nino region. Image 2: The El Nino is forecast to peak by December according to the CFS Climate model, then weakening into the Winter and Spring of 2027. What kind of weather might it bring? Well, I have been asked this a few times. Image 3: This is the ECMWF forecast for Sept-Oct-Nov which is the average of the 3 months. The consensus is wetter than normal conditions across the south and parts of our area slightly wetter than average. This doesn't mean it will rain every day. It just means a bit rainier than average. Image 4: Temperatures from the ECMWF are above average. This is indicated by the yellow and orange colors. It doesn't mean every day will be hot or warmer, it just means the season as a whole will be warmer than average. Image 5: The CFS Climate model is indicating the same as far as rainfall. Above average in the green. Image 6: Also the CFS is predicting above normal temperatures. So, the consensus in our climate models is a warmer than normal and rainier than normal Fall. Doesn't mean it will be right, but thats what the data is showing. Image 7 and 8: What about Hurricane Season? So far the 2026 Atlantic Hurricane Season is the quietest in the satellite era. This is largely due to El Nino causing increased wind shear. With that said, given El Nino is record strong, wind shear is also record strong across the Atlantic. Wind shear destroys hurricane development and prevents it. The blue tracks on image 8 show you tropical storms, but no hurricanes for 2026 so far. El Nino is showing potential to cause the 2026 hurricane season to feature 0 hurricanes and it would be the first time this has happened in the Satellite Era. The last season with 0 hurricanes was 1914. However, Hurricane Season does not end until November 30th.

WEATHER ALERT: A Severe Thunderstorm Warning has been issued for Buchanan, Dickenson, and South Western McDowell County until 11:15 am. Image 1: The orange shading shows the current severe warning. Image 2: This is the text from The National Weather Service. 60 mph winds are the primary threat a long with heavy rainfall. Image 3: This is the current radar with the arrows showing the storm motion. Move indoors until these storms pass. Stay away from windows and prepare for strong wind gusts if you are under these warnings until at least 11:15 am.

WEATHER ALERT: the National Weather Service has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch until 9 pm for all the counties in pink. This does include McDowell, Wyoming, Mercer, and other pink. A Severe Thunderstorm Watch means conditions are favorable for severe thunderstorms. Monitor later forecast and have a way to get warnings. Severe thunderstorm warnings are the orange polygons. Image 2: showers and thunderstorms are developing to the north and are moving from north to south through the evening. Continue to stay weather aware.

WEEKEND THUNDERSTORMS: I just wanted wanted to give everyone a quick update. Heat is going to continue through the weekend with temperatures in the 90's. Image 1: Heat Alerts are once again in effect for all the counties in orange through 8:00 pm Friday. Temperatures in these counties could have indexes reach 103 degrees. Image 2: We are also going to be looking at the chance for showers and thunderstorms. Some thunderstorms could be severe, but widespread severe thunderstorms are not expected. Parts of our area are in a level 2 Slight Risk on Friday and Saturday indicated by the yellow colors. Severe thunderstorms with damaging winds and heavy rainfall being the primary threats. We are not expecting tornadoes. Image 3: This is the HRRR model valid Friday valid 6:00 pm showing those hit and miss showers and thunderstorms. Image 4: Another round might come through early Saturday morning, though the idea is that these storms will be weakening as they move through the area. Again, widespread severe weather is not expected, but isolated severe thunderstorms with hot temperatures are possible. Stay weather aware.

LATE SEASON HEAT: We are officially about to go into September, though it's hardly going to feel like Fall. A late season heatwave is incoming. Rain chances most of this week are low. The greatest chance of rain is Friday. Image 1: This is the official forecast for the week. Temperatures are going to be in the low to mid 90's all week. Perfect end of season pool weather. The hottest day this week will be Wednesday at 94 degrees, though some places may approach 100. Rain chances increase toward late week. Image 2: This is the ECMWF model valid on Friday showing potentially some showers and thunderstorms coming in. We may have to watch for some strong thunderstorms on Friday, though it's too early to talk specifics. Image 3 and 4: Temperatures this week are going to be well above average this week as indicated by the red and pink colors both early week and late week. Make sure you take precautions against the heat once again this week. Limit time out doors. Make sure air conditioning is in good working order.

QUIET WEATHER AHEAD: It's been a long time since I have been able to say that, but the weather this week looks uneventful as more schools return to session. McDowell County starts back tomorrow, August 24. Wyoming County starts back August 31st. Monday-Wednesday looks dry and quiet. Temperatures a bit on the cooler side for late August. Rain chances increase for Thursday. Then the weekend, for now at least looks dry and seasonably hot if you have plans to begin your fall decorating. No big storms on the horizon. We'll take the quiet time while we have it. Image 2: This is the ECMWF model valid on Thursday showing the increase in rain and thunderstorm activity. No flooding or widespread severe weather is expected. Image 3: Temperatures this week will begin below average as indicated by the blue colors. Image 4: Warming back to slightly above average by the end of the week. Image 5: We are moving into the peak of the Atlantic Hurricane Season. 2 areas in orange have medium chance for development within the next 5 days. STRONG THUNDERSTORMS POSSIBLE: Good Saturday morning everybody. Our entire area has been added to a level 2 Slight Risk of severe thunderstorms today. Timing looks to be mainly after 3:00 pm until about midnight. Damaging winds and heavy rainfall are the primary risks here. It says there is no tornado risk. However, we never say never around here. Image 2: This is the 3km NAM model valid around 6:00 pm showing showers and thunderstorms developing to our west and moving into the area. Not everybody will see storms but it's one of those days that anybody could. Have a way to get warnings through the afternoon and evening.
