IMPROVING WEATHER: After the flooding in places this weekend, I am happy to report to you that the rain is going to be moving out of our area for a while. Much of this week will feature dry and hot conditions. We need some dry time after the rains. We have 1 more day of widespread rain to get through, which is today. Conditions start to improve on Monday. Image 1: This is the official forecast for the week. Rain is likely today. Monday, conditions start improving with only small chances for rain. Tuesday-Friday looks dry and hot with temperatures in the upper 80's and low 90's are possible for some. Image 2: This is the current radar as of 3:15 pm at the time of this update showing ongoing widespread showers and a few thunderstorms across the area. Image 3: This is the 3km NAM model valid for Monday showing scattered showers mainly south of our area. I will say from Wythe County on southward has the best chance of seeing rain and thunderstorms on Monday, though a few isolated showers can't be ruled out. Image 4: Hotter than normal temperatures build back into the area this week indicated by the red colors. Thats why I say some places may get into the 90's again. Have a great week. 6:00 PM WEATHER UPDATE: Just wanted to update everyone on the weather situation. I apologize for the lack of updates today. I was in Bluefield for much of the day, but I updated as I had a chance. Image 1: All the counties in green remain in a Flood Watch until Sunday evening. A Flash Flood Warning is in effect for northern Buchanan County until 8:00 pm, and blanket warns all of McDowell County until 8:00 pm. It has been a day of repetitive showers and thunderstorms over the same areas. Flooding has been observed. Image 2 and 3: This is the latest text from The National Weather Service. An additional 1-2 inches of rain is possible later this evening. More flooding is expected. Image 4: More showers and thunderstorms are developing to our north and west. These are non severe, but they will bring more heavy rainfall to the warned areas. Continue to monitor water levels as the sun goes down tonight. Flooding is most dangerous at night and nearly impossible to see if you are driving. I will continue to monitor the situation and will have updates as needed.

WEATHER ALERT: A Flash Flood Warning has been issued for Buchanan County and North West McDowell County until 10:15 pm. Clusters of thunderstorms with heavy rainfall have developed and 1 to 1.5 inches of rain have fallen in parts of the warned area, and an addition 1/2 to 1 inch of rain is possible. Welch, Grundy, War, Bradshaw, Iaeger, Jolo, Avondale, Stacy, Roseann, and Coalwood is in this warning. Image 2: This is the warning text from The National Weather Service. Image 3 is the radar at 7:20 showing these clusters of thunderstorms developing and moving over some of the same areas over and over. Monitor water levels if you are in the warned area, and be ready to seek higher ground.

RAINY SEASONABLE WEEK AHEAD: If you hated the extreme heat, good news. It's over. Temperatures are going to be returning to more seasonable levels this week, and rain chances will be present each day. So, a typical summer time pattern ahead. Image 1: This is the official forecast for the week. If you remember last Sunday, a lot of weather websites were down. For what reason, I still don't know. We are good to go this week though. Our greatest rain chances this week are Monday, Tuesday, Friday, Saturday. Though each day will feature the chance of thunderstorms with temperatures in the 80's. Image 2: This is the ECMWF model valid on Monday showing widespread showers and thunderstorms. No widespread severe thunderstorms are expected, but a strong thunderstorm with heavy rainfall can't be ruled out. Image 3: This is valid on Thursday showing more showers and thunderstorm. Image 4: This is Friday and this has a look of what could be more severe thunderstorms. It's early, and I will keep an eye on that. This far out though, the data is suggesting clusters of thunderstorms rather than widely scattered. That is something to keep an eye on. Image 5: How much rain this week? The ECMWF model is showing a general 2-3 inches with locally higher amounts depending on who sees repeat thunderstorms. Image 6: The GFS model is quite similar showing 2-3 inches over a weeks time. We may have to watch for isolated flooding issues again if certain areas see multiple rounds of thunderstorms. Image 7: A bit of a climate update. El Nino or abnormal warming of the Pacific continues. New monthly data continues to show El Nino being a record breaking event at +4.0 degrees above average or higher. We have never had an El Nino as strong as is forecast. El Nino events tend to crank up Earths temperature even more. Strong events lead to more heat energy in the oceans for weather events and storms to work with. El Nino is likely why we are seeing such rainy conditions, as El Nino events tend to lead to more storms and rain.

JULY 4 FORECAST: If you are planning on going out to fireworks July 4, Mother Nature may be making some of her own fireworks. Image 1: Our area is again under a Level 2 Slight Risk for Severe Thunderstorms. Level 2 is the standard risk. Any thunderstorm that forms could be severe with damaging winds and heavy rainfall. Tornadoes are not expected. Image 2: Severe heat conditions are ongoing. Heat Advisories and Extreme Heat Warnings are in effect for the counties in orange and pink through Saturday. This means July 4 is expected to be dangerously hot again. A good pool day, but keep an eye to the sky. Listen for thunder and watch for dark skies. Image 3: Short range models indicate thunderstorms will not be widespread. This is the look of scattered, but hit and miss thunderstorms. Just know again any thunderstorm could be severe on the 4th. Have a great holiday. Stay cool. Be safe.

SEVERE HEAT UPDATE: I can now provide a better update on the heat. Our weather websites are back up and functioning normally. This is mostly going to be one of them dangerous non precipitation events that is dangerous and life threatening temperatures. Image 1: Heat Advisories have been issued for all the counties in orange until 10:00 pm Friday. The heat advisory means Heat index values over 100 degrees expected. Limit time outdoors and try to stay in air conditioning if possible. Image 2: This is the official forecast for the week. Highs in the mid and upper 90's through Friday. Rain chances will increase again. Image 3: This is the ECMWF model valid Friday showing increasing rain and thunderstorm chances. Temperatures will still be in the mid and upper 90's unless you manage to get under some of the showers and thunderstorms. Again, stay inside in air conditioning if you can. Be safe. Check on your neighbors and the elderly. Make sure the pets have a cool place to stay and plenty of fresh water.
