Waquoit Bay is a representative example of shallow bays throughout the Northeastern U.S., so research here improves the understanding of these areas in general and promotes stewardship of the coast throughout the region. Today, the Reserve continues to work with partners to preserve land and water and related ecosystems, investigate compelling issues facing our coast, and provide education to students, teachers, coastal decision-makers and community members.

Calling all formal and informal educators! Our Wastewater in the Watershed workshop is coming up on September 30th and October 1st!

Explore coastal habitats, conduct field investigations, meet researchers, and discover the importance of wastewater treatment to Cape Cod and beyond! This hands-on course enhances educators’ understanding of coastal salt marshes, nutrient impacts, and watershed stewardship. Engage with classroom and web-based activities, explore estuaries and ponds, and visit wastewater treatment sites. Learn directly from researchers, including Dr. Scott D. Wankel, a WHOI scientist working at Waquoit Bay studying a range of nitrogen cycling processes in natural waters and sediments. Bring local and national data into your classroom while connecting Massachusetts state science and math frameworks and Next Generation Science Standards.

The workshop is free but space is limited!

We are excited to host educators for this week’s Teachers on the Estuary workshop! We talk about how to protect and conserve our local estuary but also model practices that protect habitats across the world. We compost our food scraps at the Reserve and use Bird Friendly Coffee from Dean’s Beans. It featured a panel on the aquaculture programs run by the Towns of Falmouth and Mashpee with Chris Avis the Mashpee Shellfish Constable, Chuck Martinsen the Deputy Director, Falmouth Marine & Environmental Services and was moderated by Tom Duncan the Town of Falmouth, Falmouth Water Quality Management Committee / Shellfish Advisory Committee.
