"sisters, period." is an incoming ambassadors program pairing high school students in the US with students in India to further menstrual health education and teach communication and leadership skills. This will equip them to change the narrative related to menstruation in their communities.

This program provides both 13-18 year old (high school age) male and female students from the US and India with the opportunity to meet once a month from March to May (2024) to learn how to reduce menstrual stigmas and improve self-confidence, leadership, and public-speaking skills. Following the completion of this program, these students will present the information they learned with peers in order to build a global community capable of combating widespread menstrual taboos.

Lelia P. is one of three Illinois Global Scholar students to successfully draft and push forward meaningful legislation in Illinois this past year. Working with Representative Janet Yang Rohr and Representative Blair-Sherlock as well as Senator Laura Ellman and Senator Glowiak Hilton, the bills Lelia drafted and advocated for will ensure all public high school students learn about the dangers of fentanyl in health class and that all high schools maintain a supply of lifesaving Naloxone (NARCAN).

This is another great testament to the Illinois Global Scholar model which gives students the time, agency, and support to learn how to effect change for the common good in communities near and far! And goes without saying that these policies would not have been possible without the many Illinois General Assembly Legislators who listen to and support the voices of our young people.

HB3522 passed the Senate Education Committee unanimously!!!
