FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Council on Rural Service Program, Inc – CORS - Receives FY2026 Head Start Funding Following Federal Delay

Head Start Operations to Reopen Week of December 8th
Piqua, OH — 12/4/2025 — Council on Rural Service Programs, Inc. (CORS) is pleased to announce that its Fiscal Year 2026 Head Start funding has officially been awarded following delays caused by the recent federal government shutdown. This long-awaited Notice of Award allows CORS to fully resume Head Start operations for children, families, and communities across our service area.

Head Start classrooms and services will reopen the week of Monday, December 8, with staff actively preparing sites to welcome children back as quickly and safely as possible.

“We are incredibly grateful to our families, staff, community partners, and local supporters for their patience and solidarity during this challenging period,” said Karin Somers CEO/Early Childhood Director of Council on Rural Services. “The delays in federal processing created uncertainty for everyone, but thanks to the unwavering dedication of our team and the support from our state and national leaders and communities, we are ready to reopen our doors and continue delivering high-quality early childhood education and family support.”

During the funding delay, CORS received exceptional support from community partners, local leaders, and emergency funders in Miami and Shelby County who helped sustain essential operations and preserve access to critical services for children and families.

“With funding now restored, our priority is ensuring a smooth, warm, and welcoming return for the children and families we serve,” Somers added.

CORS will provide reopening information directly to enrolled families, including classroom schedules, transportation updates, and site-specific details. Families with questions are encouraged to contact their local Head Start center.

Council on Rural Service Programs, Inc. (CORS) is a nonprofit organization providing education, support, and development services to children and families across west-central Ohio. Through Head Start and Early Head Start, CORS delivers comprehensive early learning, health, nutrition, and family engagement programs that build strong foundations for lifelong success.

CORS may be forced to temporarily close our Head Start and Early Head Start programs on Dec. 1, 2025, due to the possible delay with processing the federal funds.

This would impact more than 900 children and families and result in temporary layoffs for 225 staff across 9 Ohio counties.

We are working closely with partners at all levels and will share updates as soon as they are available.
