Our 7th grade scientists are learning about the Hindenburg explosion and investigating why hydrogen made such a dramatic difference when the airship caught fire in 1937.

This week, we explored the properties of hydrogen and oxygen through electrolysis of water. Students observed the gases being produced, tested their flammability, and used their observations to help understand why hydrogen is highly flammable.

Medical Detectives: Time to Find the Right Treatment!

Yesterday, our middle school PLTW Medical Detectives students became doctors! They examined Patient 1’s symptoms and vital signs and used the evidence to determine what disease the patient had. After investigating the clues, they diagnosed the patient with pneumonia!

Today, they took their investigation one step further by figuring out which antibiotic works best against the bacteria causing the infection.

Students used sterile forceps to spread bacteria across a petri dish and then carefully placed three different antibiotic discs onto the dish. Now comes the waiting!

In 24–48 hours, we’ll check the dishes to see how the bacteria responded to each antibiotic and determine which one was most effective.

Our Medical Detectives are learning that science isn’t just about finding an answer—it’s about examining evidence, asking questions, testing ideas, and using data to solve problems!

Kankakee Valley REMC Junior Board of Directors
This program gives students an opportunity to develop leadership, communication, career, and project-management skills while connecting with business professionals and giving back to their communities. Students who complete the program will also receive a $1,000 college scholarship. Due to the storm that came through our area last week, which caused power outages, school and mail delays, and loss of internet access for many, we made the decision to extend the application deadline for this program. The new deadline for applications is August 27. Applications can be emailed or dropped off to the REMC.
Students must submit an application, a short introduction video, and a letter of nomination that can be from anyone, except a family member. Additional information on the program, along with the application can be found using the link below.

Applications are now being accepted for students who will be juniors in high school during the 2026–2027 school year. Earn a College Scholarship Want to make real decisions that impact your...

Sound Waves in Action!

Yesterday, Mrs. Sonaty's 8th grade science students made string telephones while learning about sound waves.

Just when we thought the lesson was almost over, one student asked, “I wonder how far it would work?”

Of course, we HAD to find out!

Our string telephone worked at 55 feet! Now we’re wondering… how much farther can we go?
