People often ask how I got into fixing flutes, and making this little lady was one of the things that convinced me.

I’d always been interested in how things work, and always made things with my hands, and basically since the beginning of the internet, had kept an eye on Jon Landell’s flute repair classes. I finally was able to afford to go to one in 2015, and the first class I did was Build Your Own Headjoint. It was such a magical week - nothing but working with this beautiful material, patiently filing, sanding, and shaping it for hours on end.

I had never experienced anything like the kind of peace and intense focus it gave me. I was hooked, and knew that I had to find a way to do that all day.

I took all his other courses ( except Build Your Own Flute...anyone have an extra $25K laying around I can have? 😜), and by the middle of 2016, I was able to quit my public school teaching job and repair full time.

Stockton #1 is a little dented (I learned to keep a clear workspace after that!) and a little crooked, but she plays well enough that I’ve done concerts with her. I still have some work to do on her 4 years later to get her where I want, but I’m trying not to rush and go too far, haha. Although it would be a good excuse to go back and do the class again!

Jon’s classes are running this year, as always, and you can read more at landellflutes.com. A lot of us in the industry passed through his workshop at one point or another, so if you’re interested in flute repair, check him out. 🤩

Very generous comments from one of my prize students, who is also teaching and passing on the tools to the younger people. Thanks for posting, Matt.

Each time I teach the Build Your Own Head! class, I have the students design their own business logo, and I hand engrave their name and logo and a number 1 on their piece. That way they have a first piece that's totally personal and formally engraved. I can't teach them to engrave in such a short time, but at least they have a pattern piece to work from the next time around.
