GLAS hopes to see STEM-interested students from the Wisconsin School for the Deaf (WSD) sometime in the coming year to participate in one or more of our tech projects. The conversation started last year with our visit to WSD and our work with consultant Anissa Haywood to chart a course for the entire office to learn basic ASL. On Thursday, July 30th, we hosted teachers from WSD at GLAS to show them what we have to offer and make them feel WELCOME! Jamie Sfarnas, graduate student from Gallaudet, presented her research to our guests in the afternoon. Her presentation was in ASL, which gave everyone an experience of what it is like to receive information through an interpreter.

Olivia and Kate gave Jamie Sfarnas a tour of the GLAS office as soon as she arrived from Washington DC this afternoon. In recognition of our country’s 250th Anniversary, some members of the GLAS Education team recently made a visit to the historic Judy and Stanley Frankel Detroit Observatory (known as the Detroit Observatory) located on the campus of The University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Kate Meredith, President/CEO of GLAS Education; Olivia Smithmier, Education Contractor; James Cudworth, GLAS Board Chair; and, intern Jamar Zhou, a computer science and physics major at University of Chicago, visited the Detroit Observatory to learn how 19th Century astronomers used mechanical instruments to precisely measure stellar locations and distances.

Built in 1854, the Detroit Observatory is the University of Michigan’s second-oldest building, now managed by the Bentley Historical Library with programs and efforts to make centuries of science relevant for a new generation. The Observatory currently houses many of the instruments 19th Century astronomers used to measure stellar motions and distances.

Smithmier is guiding an intern project this summer to demonstrate the operating principles of the sextant. The sextant is a tool that measures the angle between a celestial body and the horizon at a precise time of the day. Sailors once used it to determine their location at sea, and requires precise settings with STEM knowledge of astronomy, geometry and math to work properly. Smithmier designed the project to tie into America's 250th Anniversary to teach students how our forebears used the stars to find their way.

Studying with Smithmier this summer, Zhou is now working on creating 3D models that visually and tactilely demonstrate the principles behind the operation of a sextant. GLAS has some significant connections to the Detroit Observatory. Dr. Katya Gozman is a former GLAS intern, a current GLAS board member, and was a staff member at the Observatory while earning her PhD at University of Michigan.

GLAS Education and the Geneva Lake Environmental Agency continued their cooperation as interns from GLAS, GLEA, and Walworth County agencies ventured out to do a fish survey along the shores of Geneva Lake on June 25. "It is our near shores survey. We work with a contractor through the DNR to go out and basically grab samples of fish from certain areas around the lake," said Holly Baseman, Executive Director/CEO of the GLEA. The nonprofit agency works for lakeside communities, monitoring the environmental health of Geneva Lake, a major economic engine for this area. GLAS Intern Miles Kreske said the interns used seine nets to collect fish from various sites. "We counted them and sorted them and then threw them back," Miles said. Most of the samples were fry, or young, but there were larger examples as well. "We saw a big ol' bass," said Miles, estimating the length at 10 inches. There were some smaller blue gill and some adult perch as well. Miles said the experience was fun with some unexpected side effects. "We were getting a lot wetter than we thought we would be getting," he said. Joining Miles was intern Micah Lewis. Intern Tai Lin went on a survey later in the day. Holly said the GLEA is interested in GLAS projects focusing on lake health. "We are very intrigued with some of the projects GLAS is working on and definitely looking at ways to partner together," she said. She said GLEA and GLAS have been discussing putting testing equipment on GLAS’s Geneva Lake Water Quality Monitor to measure the impacts of the invasive quagga mussels that have settled in Geneva Lake. Astrophysics is at the heart of Geneva Lake Astrophysics and STEAM, and so our interns are invited to put eye to eyepiece and view the celestial objects. In the early afternoon, the most visible object is the Sun. Recently, Adam McCulloch, GLAS's Education and Outreach Manager and telescope expert, set up two telescopes for interns to safely view our major star just eight light minutes away. The smaller, brass-colored solar scope, has a special lens that makes it safe and easy to observe the prominences and flares on the Sun's surface. The larger Dobsonian telescope, fitted with a white light filter, allows the observer to see the features on the Sun's surface, sunspots in particular. It takes a little bit of practice with the telescopes to identify what is being observed, but the interns caught on quickly. The lenses of both telescopes are shielded to protect the viewers' eyes while observing the fascinating surface of our Sun.

Cameron Close, an engineer who works on real rockets, is bringing his expertise to GLAS Education. Cameron, of Lake Geneva, visited GLAS June 23 and gave a short presentation to our staff and interns about his work at Relativity Space of Long Beach, California, where he is principal vehicle fluids design engineer. But he is also a teacher and mentor for other engineers at the company.
"My job is to make engineers become better engineers," Cameron said. A member of the Lake Geneva Jaycees, Cameron said he learned about GLAS from Adam McCulloch, GLAS Outreach and Education Manager. "Adam came to a Jaycee meeting and talked about getting funding for internships. And while he was talking about what you guys do here, I was excited about coming in here to help," Cameron said. "The plan is for them to use me as a consultant. I'll probably be in once a week." A native of Akron, Ohio and graduate of Akron University, Cameron has been with Relativity for six years. Relativity is a private rocket company competing with the likes of SpaceX, he said. He said he and his wife moved to Lake Geneva three years ago to be closer to her family. Cameron said both his parents were teachers and he enjoys his role as a mentor, teacher and coach. "I'm kind of looking to bring that sort of thing to this area," he said.

GLAS Education drew "Oooos" and "Ahhhhs" from an international group of 60 Counselors in Training (CITs) at Holiday Home Camp, Williams Bay, on June 18. These young CITs, some from as far away as the U.K. and Australia, will become future camp directors and counselors when they get home. GLAS staff and interns set up astronomical binoculars and two telescopes to the Star Party in a clearing at the Holiday Home grounds, focused them on the night sky and got the group of international teens to freak out (in a good way) about the universe. We also brought along a tactile telescope, which GLAS President and CEO Kate Meredith used to show what telescopes look like on the inside and how they work. The teens peppered Adam McCulloch, GLAS astronomy expert and Education and Outreach Manager, with questions about the Moon, the planets and the stars and Adam did not disappoint. The CITs were heard to tell each other, "Ask Adam" about any questions concerning astronomy. Several CITs later told us they will take what they learned from GLAS to future camps and campers when they become full-fledged camp leaders.
