Bringing together award-winning journalists Hannah Allam of ProPublica and C.J. Chivers of The New York Times Magazine, the event explores how reporting on the Middle East has evolved in the 25 years since 9/11.

Award-winning journalists Hannah Allam of ProPublica and C.J. Chivers of The New York Times Magazine will join Neil Swidey, director of the Brandeis Journalism Program, for a conversation about how reporting on the Middle East has evolved in the 25 years since 9/11.

One week out from our event, Allie Ladjeva ’27 asks Brandeis students what questions they have for the journalists.

MEET THE FELLOWS: Ibrahim Elhoudaiby

Ibrahim Elhoudaiby is a Junior Research Fellow at the Crown Center for Middle East Studies.

Elhoudaiby’s research focuses on the economic and legal histories of nineteenth- and twentieth-century Egypt within its broader regional context. His research interests include corporations, Islamic law, the history of capitalism, and the politics of sports. He is also a founding editor at Alpheratz Magazine.

He holds a PhD in Middle Eastern Studies from Columbia University, an MA in Political Science and Development and a BA in political science from the American University in Cairo, as well as a diploma in Islamic Studies from the High Institute of Islamic Studies in Cairo.

Applications are now open for the Crown Center’s 2027–2028 Faculty Leave Fellowship!!

The one-year residential fellowship supports scholars working on the contemporary Middle East and North Africa across the humanities and social sciences.

During their residency, fellows will pursue a substantive research or book project, mentor junior research fellows, contribute to Crown Center publications, and participate in Center events.

Featuring panelists Sina Azodi, Osamah F. Khalil, Shamiran Mako, and Mejgan Massoumi, and moderated by Naghmeh Sohrabi, the event looked at the past 25 years not only through the lens of U.S. policy, but through the experiences and transformations of the region itself.
