I became a teacher because I was inspired by the extraordinary educators I encountered as a student at Dana Hall School. They challenged me intellectually, nurtured my curiosity, and demonstrated the transformative power of great literature. Since beginning my career in the New York City public schools in 2009, I have taught English in grades 6–12, including AP English Language and Composition and AP English Literature and Composition, primarily in independent schools. Throughout my career, I have designed courses that challenge students to think deeply, write with purpose, and discover the enduring relevance of great literature.

I hold a B.A. in English from Connecticut College and an M.A. in English Education from New York University. I was also honored to participate in Harvard University's Project Zero Classroom Fellowship, where I explored how inquiry, visible thinking, and purposeful classroom discussion can deepen student understanding. That experience fundamentally shaped my approach to teaching and continues to influence my classroom today. I believe students learn best when they are actively engaged in making meaning: asking thoughtful questions, wrestling with complex ideas, collaborating with their peers, and reflecting on their own thinking. My goal is to create a classroom defined by intellectual curiosity, high expectations, and authentic relationships, where students become not only stronger readers and writers but also more thoughtful, empathetic, and confident people.

My passion for teaching eventually expanded beyond the classroom. As an instructional coach with BetterLesson, I partnered with K–12 teachers across the country, facilitating professional learning, coaching educators, and helping them design engaging, student-centered learning experiences. Supporting teachers reminded me that meaningful learning is contagious: when educators continue to grow, their students do too.

When I am not teaching, designing curriculum, or inevitably thinking about teaching, you'll usually find me taking a dance class, out for a run, curled up with a great book, or searching for an exceptional cup of coffee. Most of all, I enjoy spending time with my husband and our three children, who keep life joyful, busy, and full of adventure.

Throughout my career teaching in both large public systems and small independent schools, I have thrived on the challenge of tailoring instruction to meet individual student needs, regardless of the subject matter.

Typically, I have been successful helping students improve their reading and written expressive skills through Orton-Gillingham, Wilson, and EmPOWER methodologies.

I was selected to give several demonstration lessons when the International Dyslexia Association (formerly the Orton Dyslexia Society) held its international conference in Boston. However, my overarching philosophy is to meet each student where they are rather than strictly adhering to any single approach.

In mathematics, I customize and supplement classroom curricula to support diverse learners. Over the years I have supported students using Investigations 3, Illustrative Math, Beast Academy, Art of Problem Solving, Go Math, and Connected Math Project (CMP3).

Committed to continuous professional growth, I actively stay current with evolving educational practices, recently attending a two-day Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) Summit and participating in an ongoing Restorative Practices workshop.

Key Certifications: Massachusetts License: Teacher of Children with Moderate Special Needs | Certified Wilson Reading System Level I Teacher | NCLB Highly Qualified Teacher | Trained in Orton-Gillingham & EmPOWER.

I love teaching science! After many years as a high school science teacher at Chapel Hill–Chauncy Hall School, I’m thrilled to be joining the Lumen community.

My classroom is filled with hands-on activities that encourage students to discover how things work for themselves, rather than simply being told the answers. My favorite moments are when a student’s face lights up as a challenging concept finally clicks.

I’m honored to have been recognized as the National Association of Biology Teachers’ Outstanding Biology Teacher of the Year for Massachusetts, and I strive to bring the research-based approaches I learned while earning my Master’s in Science Education into my teaching every day.

I can’t wait to explore the wonders of science with our students!

I was born and grew up in Maine, but have studied in Israel, Russia, Poland, England (several times), Germany, and a number of these United States, driven by a life-long belief that history is not just a record of facts and chronology, but an engine to another destination of self-identification. In addition to teaching in independent and charter schools from Maine to Tennessee (and at two schools in DC), I also taught for a summer programme for talented and gifted students in China (but to be sure, my focus is on knowing and teaching all students and not just those with an interest in history and humanities).

I have worked as a landscaper, house painter, drummer and barroom piano player, and as a crew leader for the United States Forest Service, but the classroom best feeds my spirit. I like to laugh, loudly and often; I love to read, write, and think film is both a source of entertainment and serious study. I adore my family and rescue dogs (I am on a quest to become the person my dogs think I am), but also primarily define myself as my grandson’s grandfather.

🧪☀️ Summer Greetings From Our Teachers!

Next up in our series is Ms. Labrecque, our incredible Science teacher, who has spent part of her summer doing what she loves - learning!

Greetings from Ms. Labrecque:

☀️ Wow, what a whirlwind two weeks at Camp Tamias! To me it felt like an incredibly friendly and energized professional development retreat disguised as summer camp,. My brain is buzzing with new ideas. 🧠✨

I’ve spent the last fortnight attending fascinating lectures and collaborating with brilliant minds to cook up some exciting future science units:

🌌 Space-Age Chemistry: Inspired by an awesome astrophysics lecture by Julia Brodsky, I’m designing a unit to introduce kids to chemistry through virtual travels around our solar system!

💄🏛️ Chemistry in the Ancient World: I’ve been collaborating with a historian, Lilia Gelman, to research beautification in the ancient world. Eventually, it will become an incredible, multi-part curriculum exploring the history and chemistry of cosmetics, ancient toxins, and nutrition around the globe!

🧬 Optogenetics: A lecture on light-sensitive rhodopsins by Elena Govorunova has me dreaming about some new ways to teach sensory biochemistry (to add to what we learned about GPCRs!)

💻 Cybersecurity: Some great group discussions with Sasha Timokhov sparked a plan to teach an advanced python unit.

🧀 Hands-on fun: I even got to make my own cheese thanks to Katya Albert. I would like to do this with the kids as well. We can tie it to our biochemistry unit when we talk about enzymes.

🚀 Science Research Afterschool: I attended an amazing session on DNA barcoding with Oxana Litvin. I was inspired and I’m going to try to launch an afterschool research project for kids to collect, extract, purify, amplify, detect and then send samples off for DNA barcoding. They can then present their research at Science Fairs.

Meanwhile, my own kids were entirely in their element, diving into two weeks of intensive science and Python bootcamp:

Anya and Ivan spent their time learning satellite communication, and connecting to hardware using LabView with Sergey Lyachenko, researching fungal and soil DNA with Ekaterina Kaverina and Irina Grigoryan. Thank you, our amazing teachers! 📊🦠

Besides the serious classes, there was an awesome course in Roman history, food, and culture (toga and all!). 🏛️🌱

So grateful to Tamias community for these incredibly inspired kids, and the sheer joy of learning. Now, time to start writing these lesson plans! 📝

🌿☀️ Summer Greetings From Our Teachers!

Next up in our summer series is Ms. Kim, our wonderful English teacher, enjoying everything a New England summer has to offer. 📚🌊

Her days have been filled with quality time with family and friends, road trips across New England, and, of course, reading as many books as she can get her hands on. You can find Ms. Kim in whichever body of water is closest, usually with her dog (and classroom mascot) Honey! 🐾🍯

Summer is the perfect time to slow down, explore new places, and get lost in a great story. We know Ms. Kim will return in the fall with plenty of new book recommendations and exciting stories to share with her students!

📖 We’d love to hear from our Lumen families—which book has been your favorite read this summer? Share your recommendations in the comments!
