🔨🧲 At Lumen Academy, Build & Code is part of our curriculum starting from Kindergarten! Through hands on projects, students learn to think creatively, solve problems, experiment, and bring their ideas to life!

Here’s a peek at what our middle schoolers have been up to!

🎪 Grades 5-6: Our Carnival & Arcade Games unit is in full swing! Students explored collisions, stability, and center of mass through Clatter Cups, a fun challenge from the Mark Rober curriculum. They’ve also been brainstorming and prototyping ideas for their very own games for our upcoming STEM festival!

🧲 Grades 7-8: Our older students have jumped into electromagnetics, building magnetic levitators, experimenting and discovering the fascinating forces of magnetism.

🎨✨ Creativity is in full swing in the Lumen art room!

Over the past few weeks, students across all grades have been exploring color, line, pattern, composition, and plenty of imagination.

Everyone began the year by decorating their own art portfolios, ready to hold all the creativity still to come! From there, our younger artists experimented with patterns, line monsters, reviewed warm colors and emotive eye shapes as they created whimsical Cats & Leaves collages from painted papers colored with tempera.

Grade 3 learnt about the compositional value of negative space and watercolor techniques.

Grades 4–8 moved from designing their portfolios into a street art and graffiti-inspired project, exploring bold lettering, style, and self-expression.

Our students in Art Elective started the year by designing pop-up style rooms and have moved on to *Secret Lives Of Ants* mixed-media pieces.

We love seeing the art room filled with focused faces, colorful hands, creative ideas, and the pride that comes with finishing something uniquely their own. ❤️

🔬✨ Two fairs, one amazing Sunday!

What a fantastic day we had yesterday at the Cambridge Science Carnival and Vmeste Fair! It was a busy day filled with curious minds, creativity, fun, and so many wonderful families! 💛💙

⚡ Cambridge Science Carnival was buzzing with energy! We had an incredible turnout at our Wired for Art booth, where kids got hands on with circuits, LEDs, and servo motors to bring their own artwork to life with lights and movement! It was wonderful to see so much excitement, curiosity, and creativity in action!

🧩 Over at Vmeste Fair, we kept little minds busy with fun math puzzles and challenges, sparking plenty of thinking, problem solving, and smiles!

A big THANK YOU to both organizers for bringing everyone together, and to all the families who stopped by, joined our activities, chatted with us, and showed interest in Lumen Academy. We truly enjoyed meeting each and every one of you! ❤️

🧪✨ Our Grade 7–8 students kicked off Chemistry by exploring the fascinating world of alchemists and the discoveries that helped shape modern science.

Alchemists developed many useful techniques (e.g., distillation), reactions (e.g., pyrolysis), and recipes (e.g., making amalgams and acids, and inventing black powder). Our students learned how these early discoveries helped move our understanding of the world beyond the four classical elements - earth, water, air, and fire - and paved the way for the study of atoms and the periodic table.

And, of course, the best part was putting chemistry into action! 🔬 Students experimented with making black powder and transforming copper into “silver” and then “gold”, using zinc and heat to eventually create brass.

A little history, a lot of chemistry, and plenty of hands on discovery! ⚗️✨

🎭 Our Black Box Theater classes are off to an energetic start, with students across grades jumping in, working together, observing, creating, and having lots of fun along the way!

Through theater, students build confidence, creativity, imagination, teamwork, and problem-solving skills—all while learning to express themselves in new ways. ✨

Math + Games + Lots of ‘I got it’ moments! 🧩✨

Our K-Grade 2 Math Team has been having so much fun with logic puzzles, math games, and challenges that get them thinking, laughing, and working together. We love seeing how excited they get when they figure something out! 💡

Math Team K-2 meets Wednesdays after school and is open to everyone - you do not have to be a Lumen student to join! 💛

A little sawdust, a lot of creativity, and something our students can be proud of! 🪵🛠️🌱

Our students have been busy woodworking in Build & Code, and they just finished making their very own flower pots! We love seeing them work with their hands, learn new skills, and watch an idea slowly take shape into something they created themselves.

Next step: planting in them and watching something new grow! 🌱💚

What a fun weekend at the RSM Brookline Back to School Bash! 🎉💙

A big thank you to RSM Brookline for inviting Lumen to be part of the celebration. We had such a great time meeting so many wonderful families and enjoying all the activities - from math puzzles ♟️ and chess to making some seriously HUGE bubbles! 🫧
