Today, in our, ‘Heroines of the COVID-19 Pandemic’ series, we highlight Lola Talabi-Oni, who is the Technical Advisor to the Statistician-General at the National Bureau of Statistics in Nigeria.
Through her role as Technical Advisor to the Statistician-General at the National Bureau of Statistics in Nigeria, Lola Talabi-Oni recognized early on during the COVID-19 pandemic that aggregating data across government organizations could help to dramatically improve public understanding of the virus and aid ongoing response efforts.
Working with the Global Partnership for Sustainable Development Data, hosted by the United Nations Foundation (UN Foundation), the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), and 14 other partners, Lola built and launched Nigeria’s National Coronavirus Geospatial Data Hub.

Today, in our, ‘Heroines of the COVID-19 Pandemic’ series, we highlight Jacinda Ardern, Prime Minister of New Zealand.
Jacinda Ardern is New Zealand's youngest ever female prime minister. Under her leadership, the country locked down early at only six cases back in March 2020, and to date, new arrivals are required to quarantine for 14 days despite being declared virus-free.
On top of this, she has maintained transparency with the public through daily communications. Whether a Facebook Live stream urging people to “stay home, save lives”, or asking them to look after one another as a shared responsibility to unite the country; Jacinda has assured people that she is a trustworthy leader and an emotional human being just like themselves.

Today, in our, ‘Heroines of the COVID-19 Pandemic’ series, we highlight Jane Caldwell, the CEO of Age UK.
Age UK is a federation of around 140 independent charities supporting older people across the country. Jane Caldwell is the CEO of Age UK East London, working with over 9,000 older people in hospitals, the community, and their homes, as well as a member of the CPI People's Panel. Though East London boroughs are vibrant and diverse, they have the highest deprivation of income for older people in England.
Jane and her team responded swiftly to COVID-19; expanding services in hospitals, and increasing support for those at home. They mobilized faster than many health and social care systems, immediately providing humanitarian support to other groups made vulnerable by COVID-19 including rough sleepers, those with no recourse to public funds, and women escaping domestic violence.

Each day this week, we will be presenting a new member of our, ‘Heroines of the COVID-19 Pandemic’ series which will highlight women who have led, saved lives, and made history throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. Thank you to the CH-CH Visual and Performing Arts Department for creating this series, and we look forward to their Women’s History activity during the Student Life block on Thursday.
Today we highlight Vera Songwe, Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa.
Through passionate and inclusive leadership, Vera Songwe is the first woman to head the United Nations (UN) Economic Commission for Africa (ECA). Vera has drawn inspiration from Nelson Mandela and Martin Luther King Jr. in recent public statements, with their visions as relevant now in 2020. Her leadership in ensuring Africa grows back and builds back better in its COVID-19 recovery will not be easy. In considering the UN Sustainable Development Goals, COVID-19, and the myriad of challenges and opportunities from the 54 countries that make up the ECA; the decade ahead will be defined by decisions made today.
Vera’s leadership is ensuring that Africa is able to build back after the COVID-19 pandemic.

🎉 Congratulations to Nate E.-R. ‘22 for signing his letter of intent to play basketball at Clark University next year, and for being named the 2022 Basketball MVP of the Massachusetts Bay Independent League! Nate is a two time MBIL all-league selection (‘20 & ‘22) and a 7-time varsity letter recipient for CH-CH.
Nate averaged just over 15 points per game this season, as well as leading the Chargers in rebounding. He is a true team player, a strong passer who is very willing to share the ball with his teammates. His ability to play at and above the rim at both ends is a dimension rarely seen in the MBIL.
Coach Bubar reflected that “Nate’s presence on a daily basis in practice has been outstanding, and he sets the tone for our younger players. No other player in the league was able to impact the game at both ends in a way Nate did this year. Perhaps most importantly, Nate has set the bar for a positive competitive culture in our program that I believe will extend well beyond his time here, and is reflective of both his competitive nature and his commitment to others.”
Nate is a three-year captain of the Charger basketball team and led the team to a 12-3 season, finishing 2nd in the MBIL.
Congratulations, Nate!
