🎤 How you end your speech matters more than you think.

I recently read this great piece from our local Toastmasters club:

It reinforces something many of us overlook—
your closing is what people remember most.

Research and speaking best practices consistently show that audiences retain the final moments of a presentation more than anything else.

A few powerful ways to close that really stood out:

👉 Circle back to your opening to create a sense of completion
👉 Issue a clear call to action—tell your audience what to do next
👉 Use a quote or story to leave a lasting emotional impression
👉 Ask a thought-provoking question that lingers after you’re done
👉 Paint a picture of the future to inspire action and possibility

The big takeaway:
Don’t just end your speech—land it.

Too many presentations fade out with “that’s it” or “thank you.”
The best ones build to a final moment that sticks.

🎤 Are you using the stage… or just standing on it?

I recently came across a great article from our local Toastmasters club—

It’s a powerful reminder that great speaking isn’t just about what you say, but how you show up.

A few takeaways that really stood out:

👉 You have ~30 seconds to win your audience. Open strong—story, humor, or something unexpected.

👉 Don’t “warm up” into your speech—put your best first.

👉 Use the stage with intention. Movement, pauses, and presence all reinforce your message.

👉 Shift from “I” to “we.” The more your audience sees themselves in your message, the more they engage.

What struck me most is this:

A speech is not a script—it’s an experience.

The most effective speakers don’t just deliver content. They create connection, energy, and momentum from the moment they step up.

If you’re looking to sharpen these skills, I highly recommend checking out our club:

🎤 Want to Open Your Next Speech with Impact?

Great speakers know that the first words you say can make all the difference. This Toastmasters article “How to Open a Speech with Impact,” suggests five powerful ways to grab your audience’s attention right from the start: asking a thought-provoking question, beginning with a story, sharing a surprising fact or statistic, arousing curiosity, or opening with a memorable quotation. Each technique helps you break through listeners’ daydreams and spark their interest in what you have to say.

Come practice this technique and more with Sales and Marketing Toastmasters in Lexington, MA!

One area that often needs improvement in public speaking is the introduction of the next speaker. A well-crafted introduction can make the difference between an audience that’s mildly attentive and one that’s fully engaged from the start.
When you’re the first speaker, it’s your responsibility to give a brief yet effective introduction. This introduction serves three key purposes:
Establish Context – It helps the audience understand what the speech is about without revealing too much.
Build Credibility – It shows why the speaker is qualified or personally connected to the topic.
Create Anticipation – It stirs curiosity and excitement for what’s to come.
The audience should be thinking, “I can’t wait to hear this!” by the time you finish reading the introduction.

From Scary to Thrilling in 8 Months

Hey everyone! In the spirit of Halloween, I just read a great story by fellow Toastmaster Iana Vitkova about her journey from loathing public speaking to loving it in just eight months. She went from feeling terrified to walking onstage at a tech conference with excitement instead of nerves.

Some fun highlights:
👀 She noticed how much she swayed during her first speech — and started working on it.

🎤 The friendly feedback from fellow club members helped her so much.

🚀 And now she’s saying “yes” to big speaking gigs she never would’ve before.

If you’ve ever thought “Ugh, speaking in public? No thanks,” her story might change your mind!

Speaking of stepping out of comfort zones — don’t forget our Halloween-themed Toastmasters meeting tomorrow night (Wednesday, October 23) at the Lexington MA Community Center, 39 Marrett Rd. 🎃👻
