Join us for “Making It Grow” on Tuesday, October 6 at 7 p.m. on South Carolina ETV from ETV Carolinas in Rock Hill, SC.
Hosts Amanda McNulty and Terasa Lott of Clemson Extension welcome Clemson Extension Horticulture Agents Brandon Green and Abigail McKinney, along with Michelle Crump from Wilson's Nursery & Garden Center.
Later in the show, well will have a special segment called “Feathers, Fur, and 4H”, featuring the 4H Rabbit and Poultry Projects. Clemson Extension South Carolina 4-H Youth Development Agents Freddricka Pressley and Elizabeth Snipes join Amanda in the ETV Sumter studio along with some of their 4H members who demonstrate how to properly show their rabbits and chickens while sharing how they care for them like just like they would in a competition. Then, Horticulture Agent Carmen Ketron joins Amanda as the rabbits return in their Halloween costumes for a fun twist on the showmanship category.

Hosts Amanda McNulty and Terasa Lott of Clemson Extension welcome Clemson Extension Horticulture Agents Vicky Bertagnolli and Jackie Jordan, along with Davis Sanders of South Pleasantburg Nursery.

Amanda visits the home of Dr. Brandon Huber from South Carolina State 1890 Research and Extension, where he grows giant pumpkins and watermelons for State Fair competitions. Each of these massive fruits is carefully tended under its own special tent, some with fans to keep the stems dry, and webcams that let Brandon monitor them when he’s away. He also shares the details on what it takes to cultivate these giants and explains the many challenges he works hard to prevent.

Later in the show, Amanda McNulty talks with Jennifer Kindel, the state bat biologist with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, about the bats found in South Carolina and some interesting facts about them.

Wrapping up last week, the Grain Bin Entrapment Simulator traveled to Cowpens Fire Department for grain entrapment rescue training. Personnel from the area received hands-on training on how to safely rescue an entrapped victim from grain or other bulk media.

Farmers and agricultural workers can face long-term exposure to hazards that may increase the risk of certain cancers, including pesticides, dust and mold, UV radiation, and other chemicals. Because of these many exposures, prevention over the years is extremely important to limit the risk of developing cancer. Using the appropriate PPE, following all pesticide and chemical labels, reducing exposure to chemicals, and protecting your skin from the sun can all help reduce risks.
