My kingdom for the day we stop talking about their “wins” and “losses” not based on their wins and losses.

Their wins are the nights they come in and do the work - even when it’s hard, or inconvenient, or frustrating. The classes when the long-term corrections finally come to term… and all the classes that were part of the process of getting there. The rehearsals when the note suddenly makes perfect sense AND gets applied in real time. The shows that end with them standing on a stage with the people who contributed equally to creating something meaningful, and beautiful, and special.

Their losses are the days they come in unprepared. The times they can’t get out of their own way and get on the same page with each other. The times they put self-serving instincts ahead of what’s best for the group, the show, the arts as a whole. The times they give up and DON’T get back up again.

It’s about being a part of something that is bigger and more important than anything you could accomplish alone. It’s about learning. It’s about the “how”, not the “what”. It’s about training these kids to be good people, not just good performers.

And, yes. We celebrate their “wins”. But we only get to do that because we celebrated all the real wins that led to them. The ones that no one ever sees.
