In May 2024, the Sun unleashed a historic solar storm, the strongest in two decades, causing auroras to be visible at unusually low latitudes from the U.S. From May 3rd to May 9th, NASA’s Solar Dynamic Observatory recorded 82 significant solar flares.
These included nine X-class flares., with an X5.8 flare peaking on May 10. Traveling up to 3 million mph, reaching Earth on May 10. Triggering a G5-level geomagnetic storm. The auroras were observed globally and captured by thousands of citizen scientists contributing to the study of auroras!
