Here is the Shooting Sports practice schedule for August and September! We have a morning option for our homeschool kids, but everyone is welcome to come to the practices that work best for them! Right now the evening practices are tentatively set for 5:30 pm, but we can adjust the time if we need to.

The Lawrence County Fair Rodeo is tonight and tomorrow and 4-H will be there again selling cotton cotton and popcorn!! This is a great fundraiser for us each year and we’re grateful for the opportunity! We encourage all of our 4-H members to come help out, as this fundraiser supports all of our clubs and activities.

Here is the most recent updated report of the progression of the New World Screwworm. The number of active cases have been in a decline for the past three months. As of right now, there are only two active cases which are in SW Texas at this time. There have been no flies caught in the fly traps that have been distributed which is a good thing. Right now we are far away from any known cases but it is still important that you inspect any wounds that your animals may have and especially any new animals that are coming into your operation. So far, positive cases have been found in cattle, dogs, and sheep but no wildlife.

Recently we took six of our senior 4 H members to compete in the 4H State O'Rama that was held on the campus of the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. All of the kids did very well in their respected events and represented Lawrence County in a positive way. Fun times were had by all and friends were made from all across the state. To qualify for the state competition each participant has to compete and place at both the county and district levels. Those who attended this years state event were Alonzo V., Dominic N., Justin A., Danielle A., Destiny A., and Jacob N. We want to congratulate all of these young men and women and also to acknowledge Danielle A. for winning 1st place in Performing Arts- Vocal. 4H is an excellent way for youth to gain valuable life skills that will help them as they grow into the leaders of tomorrow. We have started to get reports of Armyworms at treatable levels all across the state and in Lawrence County. Treatment threshholds are considered to be reached when you can count on average 3 or more worms in a square foot from 10 random samples areas. Sweepnetting is a good way to establish if you have worms but not to establish threshold levels. The table includes recommended insecticides and their rates along with grazing and hay restrictions. It's been a busy couple of weeks. I (Courteney Sisk-CEA Ag) had the pleasure of being a Presenter at the NACAA (National Agriculture County Agent Association) in Denver, CO. I spoke about the program I have been running for the last 5 years, hatching chicks right here in Lawrence County. I have developed a curriculum/agenda for other agents to follow. After speaking with fellow agents in Tennessee and Alabama, you may see our local program soon in their counties, too!

Also started Monday off with a local Walnut Ridge High School Student, Taylor N., following me to confirm Agriculture was what he wanted to pursue at the collegiate level. He went with me to check the bollworm trap (I went over what we monitor for with these traps), we walked the Soybean verification field, and I showed him my Commercial Rice Trial Plots and what we watch/document for on them. Proud to see the strong interest in ag and interest in continuing his career in the ag world.

4-H is out and about doing yard work in Lawrence County!! 🌱☀️

These kids and leaders are working hard mowing, w**d eating, and trimming limbs in several yards as part of a community service project. Their dedication, teamwork, and willingness to serve are making a real difference in our community.

Through projects like this, 4-H members are learning valuable life skills while giving back to others and demonstrating what it means to be responsible, caring citizens. We are so proud of their hard work, positive attitudes, and commitment to helping neighbors in need.

Thank you to everyone who volunteered their time and energy today. Lawrence County is a better place because of these outstanding young people! 💚🍀
