The 2026 Arkansas Voter Guides are in! These guides provide non-biased explanations for all four issues in this year's election. The guides are available at the Lawrence County Extension Office, Lawrence County Courthouse, Lawrence County Library, Lynn Library, Imboden Library, and Portia City Hall. I am including a link that you can follow that will take you to the Public Policy page where you can download the guide. The guide is also available by scanning the QR code on the voter guide cover that is pictured here.
This year there is a special issue here in Lawrence County regarding a proposed increase in the current property tax rate to benefit the county road department. The UA Division of Agriculture Public Policy Center prepared a fact sheet for this issue specifically for the residents of Lawrence County.

These voter guides are a tremendous asset when determining how you want to cast your vote. They include what a "For" or "Against" vote means, quotes from supporters and those in opposition, and how this would affect your tax bill among other things.

October 5th is the last day to register to vote in this election. Early voting starts on October 19th with the General Election taking place on November 3rd. The following link will take you to the page where you can download the voter guide.

Last week I got the opportunity to put in a forage variety demonstration with the help of Dr. Jonathan Kubesch, forage specialist for the University of Arkansas Systems
Division of Agriculture. This plot will contain 15 varieties of cool season forages including both annual and perennial varieties. Our goal is to evaluate each of these plots by yield, nutritional value, and cost. We will continue to evaluate this plot over the next few years to determine longevity and persistence of the perennials. Some of the types in this demonstration include a red clover that is 2,4D tolerant, a summer dormant fescue, and an endophyte free fescue. We plan to have a field day in the spring to showcase our results. Results will also be available in our yearly demonstration book and upon request. We want to thank Ricky and Virginia Goff for their participation in this demonstration.

First of all let me apologize for the confusion that I have created. When making my previous post my focus was on cattle. I will try to clear some of this up. First, there is no evidence that the species of Theileria Ikeda found in cattle affects humans. This parasite can occasionally infect or carry in other domestic and wild ruminants, including sheep and goats but tends to be worse in cattle. Currently there are no approved forms of treatment for Theileria so tick control becomes the best weapon. The difference between this tick and others is that the Asian Longhorn tick reproduces asexually, meaning a male is not needed. Females can produce as many as 2,000 eggs after feeding on an animal like a cow. This causes populations to grow exponentially. Lawrence County has now been confirmed as having a positive case of Theileria orientalis Ikeda. Theileria orientalis is a protozoal organism that effects cattle by infecting red blood cells. This disease in cattle exhibits symptoms similar to Anaplasmosis. The difference between it and Anaplasmosis is that Theileria orientalis can effect younger animals such as calves and pregnant heifers. This disease can be spread from animal to animal via blood contaminated equipment (needles, dehorning, castoration and tagging equipment). Another way cattle can contract this disease is by the Asian Longhorn Tick. Symptoms can include anemia, Jaundice, fever, lethargy, abortion, and occasional mortality. If any or your animals exhibit any of the symptoms please call your veterinarian. For those working cattle this fall, I would like to try to confirm this tick and how prevalent it may or may not be in the county. Please call the Lawrence County Extension Office at 886-3741 if you are willing to let me grab samples.
