A 2–30 season.
And a coach who discovered that his most important work wasn’t on the scoreboard.

For WBU volleyball coach Justin Dee, that difficult season became a powerful reminder: coaching is about more than winning games. It’s about investing in the young women God has entrusted to him.

In the new episode of Lifework, Dr. Stan Norman sits down with Coach Dee to talk about the late-night email that brought him to Williams, the players who renewed his sense of purpose, and what it means to lead with patience, kindness, and love.

It’s this season’s theme, Stewarding What You’ve Been Given, lived out beyond the volleyball court.

After years of working with school counselors and career coaches, we’ve noticed two things that never seem to change.

First, they work incredibly hard for their students, often in ways those students won’t fully understand or appreciate until years later.

Second, and more importantly, they keep showing up anyway. And they show up with joy. They care about their students and know the difference their work can make in their students’ futures. That sense of meaning and purpose comes through in how they serve, and it encourages us, too. They’re making a difference.

Our Admissions Office asks a lot of these folks as we work together to help students considering Williams. Today, we asked for something especially valuable: time away from their schools to spend a few hours with us.

And they came. From nearby Walnut Ridge, Hoxie, and Pocahontas to Springdale, Rose Bud, Searcy, Marion, West Memphis, and communities in between, counselors and coaches joined us for today’s Preview Day.

We toured campus, shared more about Williams through a special presentation, and enjoyed a luncheon together. Afterward, guests could make an optional stop at Williams Corner for a little shopping before heading home.

Most of all, we were grateful for the chance to share how we care for our students. These counselors and coaches know the young people behind the applications. They know their hopes, their challenges, and what kind of college environment could help them thrive.

When they have a student who would benefit from being known during college, we want Williams to be a place they think of. A place where someone knows their name, notices their potential, and cares about their future.

To everyone who spent part of your day with us: thank you. We know stepping away isn’t easy, and we don’t take your time or your trust for granted.

Our next Preview Day for students and families is Wednesday, October 28th.

Thank you to WBU alum Jason Mears from Harvest Baptist Church for speaking in chapel today. Sharing from Proverbs 3:5–6 and his own journey, Jason reminded our students that they don’t have to have their whole lives figured out to trust God with their next steps. Even when life doesn’t go as planned, God remains faithful along the path.

Our worship team did a great job leading us this morning, and we also announced this year’s Homecoming Court! Congratulations to these students:

Jordan West knows that feeling.

Before serving as WBU’s director of campus ministries, Jordan studied emergency management, served on the mission field in a war-torn region, returned home just before COVID, went to seminary, and wondered what God had next.

His path was not straight. But none of it was wasted.
