Today is Endangered Species Day, the third Friday of May. Great blue herons were hunted nearly to extinction in the early 1900s when feathers were a fashion staple. The Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918 stopped the trade. Today they nest in big colonies at in Marin and at Lake Merritt in Oakland (watch the rookery via ), and you can spot them year-round along East Bay creeks and reservoirs. and protect critical habitat across Contra Costa County.

Shell Ridge Open Space is in bloom. California poppies, lupines, and bird's eyes line the trails through May. Park at the Sutherland or Borges Ranch entrance. The wildflower stretches near the Sutherland gate are the work of dedicated volunteers restoring native cover after years of overgrazing. Stay on marked trails so the blooms come back next year.

May is when California's native bees show up at full strength — and there are about 1,500 native species statewide, none of them honeybees. These five plants feed them through summer and tolerate East Bay drought conditions. Plant now, water through the first summer, and most go fully self-sustaining by year two.
