Living in Mexico for 16 months...
Here are my 8 must-see locations:
1. Mexico City
Solid lodging, incredible museums, and walkable! Mexico City has great street food and fine dining that will never leave you wanting for new flavors. An international hub with amazing history that will give you the feeling of being a local from day one. A must-see!
2. Guadalajara
Guadalajara is the second-largest city in Mexico and is great for day-to-day living as the people are kind and the weather is mild. With tequila farms and mariachi bands never far away, you will get all the pros of Mexican culture without the fast-paced lifestyle found in CDMX.
3. Oaxaca
Oaxaca City is fun for a week, with art galleries, colonial architecture, and the savory mole that will explode your taste buds with spices and marinated meats that you'll never forget. The Oaxacan coast, including Puerto Escondido, Mazunte, and Huatulco to the south, has excellent beaches with picture-perfect sunsets.
4. San Miguel de Allende
A super beautiful “Pueblo Mágico” a few hours north of Mexico City. Colorful buildings with great cafes and restaurants inside. The artist scene there is crazy good, paired with cobblestone streets outside; it makes for picturesque days. Great for bed and breakfast travellers who prefer a less rugged experience. Honeymoon vibes, check.
5. Merida in the Yucatán
Hot weather, browner people (more Mayans in the south), and Caribbean influences. Day or night, the town is poppin', vibrant, international, and rated the safest area in Mexico. Awesome architecture with daily tours to Chichen-Itza and freshwater cenote pools to dive into and completely refresh your senses.
6. Los Cabos
Great for shorter, relaxed stays down the coast and hard partying in the central area near the famous arches. Known for golf courses and scenic drives along the beachside highway, the American-influenced destination offers great hotels and lots of English-speaking locals.
7. Puerto Vallarta
PV is beautiful, with it's hillside hotels tucked into the jungle and overlooking the ocean. You could make breakfast together with your partner while enjoying the stunning view. Great restaurant scene and classic Mexican tourist nightlife, with some solid spots for dancing and live music.
8. San Cristóbal de las Casas
Cold, crisp bubble-down jacket weather with a distinct local indigenous culture. An interesting mix of European and American backpackers and Mexican family vacationers. Really interesting vibe for nomad cafes, Italian hole-in-the-wall restaurants, and a naturally "left-leaning" political flair from the Chiapas guerreros. Ancient temples, mountainous ravines, and jungle waterfalls are key attractions.
You've enjoyed Cancun.
