Growing Up in Camp Leadership and Innovation Summer Camp

Ready to make some noise? 🗣

This cicada just shed its exoskeleton to join the sounds of summer.

Those are the males we hear, droning loudly to attract mates. Their calls can be as loud as a lawnmower 🙉

Summer is peak cicada season.

After mating, the adults die off within a few weeks, but their offspring will spend years underground before emerging to sing their summer song.

💪 RESILIENCE ISN’T TAUGHT. IT’S BUILT.

One of the questions I hear most often from parents is:

“How do I help my child not give up when things get hard?”

After more than 24 years leading teams and watching young people grow, I’ve learned something important:

Resilience doesn’t develop from listening to advice.

It develops by facing challenges.

In the workplace, the most successful people aren’t always the smartest.

They’re the ones who learn to adapt, solve problems, work with others, and keep moving forward when things don’t go as planned.

The same is true for our children.

Confidence grows when they discover they can do hard things.

❤️ We can’t remove every obstacle from our children’s path.

But we can give them opportunities to face challenges, learn, grow, and discover what they’re capable of.

👇 I’d love to hear from you:

What is one of the biggest challenges you’ve overcome in your life, and what did it teach you?

🌱 RAISING STRONG CHILDREN IN A DIGITAL WORLD

Day 1: Why Doesn’t My Child Tell Me Everything Anymore?

One of the most common questions parents ask is:

“Why doesn’t my child talk to me like they used to?”

The answer may surprise you.

In many cases, it doesn’t mean they’ve lost trust in you.

And it doesn’t necessarily mean something is wrong.

As children grow, they begin the important work of discovering who they are. During that process, they naturally seek more independence, privacy, and space to think for themselves.

As parents, we often notice changes like:

📱 More time in their room

🎧 More time on devices

💬 Shorter conversations

🤷 Answers like:
“Fine.”
“Nothing.”
“Everything’s okay.”

A few days ago, a mother told me:

“I miss when my son came home from school and told me everything that happened during his day.”

Maybe you’ve felt that way too.

But here’s something important I’ve learned as a parent, educator, and camp leader:

Children and teenagers often open up more during shared experiences than during direct questioning.

Some of the best conversations happen:

🌿 While taking a walk together

🎣 While fishing

🐴 While caring for animals

🎨 While creating something with their hands

🤝 While working on a project together

When we’re doing something side by side, the pressure disappears and connection begins to grow.

Research consistently shows that shared experiences strengthen communication, trust, and emotional connection between parents and children.

Connection cannot be forced.

❤️ Connection is cultivated.

And like any healthy relationship, it grows through time, presence, and meaningful experiences.

Question for Parents

When does your child talk the most?

🚶 During walks

🚗 In the car

🎣 Outdoors

🍽️ Around the dinner table

💬 Somewhere else
