🚨 MACHINERY RESCUE IN PORT CHESTER! 🚨
This past Sunday, Signal 73 Fire Training was in Port Chester (Westchester County, NY), delivering our full-day Machinery Rescue class!
One of the biggest advantages of this program is our ability to bring realistic, challenging rescue scenarios directly to your firehouse, giving your members the opportunity to sharpen skills they don’t often get to put to work.
High Risk. Low Frequency. Real-World Consequences.
The day kicked off with a tool lab and an overview of the equipment, techniques, and objectives before members rotated through several hands-on scenarios:
🔧 Ring Removal – Techniques and tools for removing rings from swollen or injured fingers.
🔧 Meat Grinder Entrapment – Freeing an extremity caught or trapped in a meat grinder.
🔧 Metal Bar Cutting – Simulating an extremity trapped in fencing, window bars, or similar metal obstructions.
🔧 Roller/Press Simulation (Gorilla Press) – Precision metal cutting using a band saw, as well as other tools and techniques, to simulate freeing an extremity pinned or crushed by industrial rollers or machinery.
⚙️ Snowblower Entrapment – A hand trapped in the discharge chute, simulating an individual attempting to clear a clog without shutting off and securing the machine’s power. The scenario also involved the snowblower being pushed against a wall, requiring members to use an endoscope to assess the entrapment and help develop a safe rescue plan.
⚙️ Floor Drain Entrapment – A foot or hand trapped inside a floor drain, simulated with PVC piping surrounded by concrete. This scenario required careful cutting, tool selection, and coordination to free the victim while minimizing additional injury.
