From the rustling leaves outside to exciting learning right on our playground, our ducklings are soaking it all in! We extended our curriculum by exploring leaf sizes—big and small—then trying fun toss-and-catch games to see how the leaves move through the air. As they watched the leaves drift down, they discovered gravity in action, strengthened color recognition, and supported each other through sharing.

Paint + play = magic! 🖌️🎶 During Paints and Pianos: Intro to Colors Week, we discovered secondary colors and how mixing primary shades can reveal brand-new colors like orange, green, and purple. The children created their own masterpieces by experimenting with red, blue, and yellow—then shared what they noticed when colors mixed. Curious minds, bright results! 💛💙❤️🌈 &pianos

Time to Wash Up, Baby! Today we invited the children into a caring washing activity where they worked gently with water, dolls, and tools. As they practiced step by step, we watched their fine motor skills grow with every try and their confidence build through meaningful play. When children engage in this activity, they are learning to explore cause and effect with water, strengthen fine motor skills by washing and squeezing, and grow their vocabulary with words like “wash,” “clean,” and “wet.”

Vehicle mud painting is the ultimate mix of creativity and discovery. Our ducklings drove toy cars through the mud paint, making tracks that stretched, overlapped, and changed with each pass. We saw big smiles as they learned ordering steps, understood how mixing changes the materials, and strengthened language by talking about their track designs.

Penguins had an exciting day of nature observations, full of curiosity and careful watching. We spotted a spider climbing up the shed, noticing its steady traction and thoughtful movement as it made its way to higher ground. Nearby, we explored a slug moving at its own pace, learning how different creatures navigate the world in their own way. We also spotted a stick bug hanging out on our wall outside the classroom. Every discovery helped us practice noticing details and asking questions.

Splatt flyswatter painting was a blast with our ducklings! They showed their big feelings through art, messy fun, and lots of color. With each dip of the fly swatter and a joyful splat onto the paper, they practiced gross motor skills while creating their own masterpieces.

🎨🌿 What a fun mud-painting day in Wallingford, CT! We set out mud for your child to mix, swirl, and create while practicing making different letters and designs. With paint brushes and fingers, children made lines, marks, and patterns—then shared stories about their creations as the mud transformed with every step! ✨🖐️

A few weeks into the school year, what's new is starting to become familiar and those everyday routines are beginning to matter more than you might realize. 💚

For young children, routines are about so much more than staying on schedule. Familiar moments throughout the day can help children know what to expect, feel secure during transitions, build healthy habits, and create a stronger sense of connection and belonging.

The good news? Routines don’t have to be complicated. ✨ Getting dressed in the morning, a hug before school, talking together at dinner, or reading the same bedtime story each night can all become comforting cues children learn to count on.

At The Nest Schools, we see that same power in the classroom. Predictable rhythms give children the security of knowing what comes next while leaving plenty of room to play, explore, create, move, and discover.

As your family settles into a new school-year rhythm, remember: children need predictable parents, not perfect parents. 💚

Nest Play Curriculum is growing right alongside our children!

As we enter Year 6 we’re introducing thoughtful updates designed to make purposeful play even more intentional, adaptable, and connected.

With clearer learning goals, more ways for teachers to bring activities to life, and parent-friendly activity summaries that show what children are learning along the way, these updates make Nest Play even more meaningful for teachers, children, and families.

When we understand the why behind the play, we can see just how much learning is happening in every moment. ✨

BIG news for The Nest Schools! ⭐🎉
Our proprietary Nest Play Curriculum, which guides learning across our schools, has received exciting recognition from not one, but TWO states!

⭐ Ohio has approved Nest Play through its Step Up To Quality program.
⭐ North Carolina has named Nest Play an approved curriculum through the North Carolina Child Care Commission and NC DCDEE.

While these recognitions come from Ohio and North Carolina, they celebrate the curriculum our children and teachers experience across The Nest Schools every day. 💚

They reinforce something we’ve always believed: play-based learning is REAL learning. Every tower built, question sparked, masterpiece created, pretend game played, and discovery made is an opportunity to build the skills, confidence, creativity, and curiosity children will carry with them for years to come. ✨

We’re incredibly proud of Nest Play, the educators who bring it to life, and this recognition of the meaningful learning happening in our classrooms every day.

New school year, new routines, and sometimes…new behaviors. 😅💛

Changes in schedules, classrooms, expectations, and everyday routines can be a lot for children to process. When children don’t yet have the words or the developmental skills to explain everything they’re feeling, those feelings can show up through their behavior instead.

So when the after-school meltdown happens or emotions suddenly feel a little bigger than usual, there may be more going on beneath the surface.

Yesterday, we talked about what to do when those tough moments get the best of us. Today, we’re looking at what those big moments might be telling us about them.

Because sometimes, big behavior is a bigger message. 💛

New routines, busy mornings, changing schedules, big feelings… back-to-school season can be an adjustment for parents, too. 💛

Sometimes, in the middle of all that change, we lose our cool. We raise our voice. We react in a way we wish we hadn’t. What happens next matters.

Taking the time to repair, to acknowledge what happened, apologize, and talk about the feelings involved shows children something incredibly important: We all have big emotions. We all make mistakes. And we can take responsibility and make things right.

As your family settles into a new school-year rhythm, remember that emotional intelligence isn’t about handling every moment perfectly. Sometimes, some of the most meaningful lessons come from what we do after a hard moment. 🪺💛
