LH Ag Mechanics Equipment Spotlight:
John Deere 6000 Series
The John Deere 6400 showed up one fine spring day in May, 1998. It had 100 engine horsepower (I suppose it still does, wherever it is), two wheel drive and a Power Quad transmission with 16 forward/reverse gear choices. A clutch pedal is involved, but so is "Park".... interesting.... To set the record straight, much to the many generations of students' chagrin, we don't use cabs on our tractors because they are essentially teaching tools, and the brave teacher needs to be able to instruct the driver from the ground and every few years or so, be able to reach up and turn the key left.

The 6400 moved on in 2013 and was replaced by the JD 6105M, which as you can see in the pictures, looks almost identical to the 64. It is believed that the M stand for "Meh" as the engine horsepower is identically rated, but suffers due to the emissions controls in place. Otherwise, it's the same transmission with 2 wd. It rides well over the road and is very forgiving for new drivers on a cone course.

In addition to new driver training, the primary jobs of the 6105 (and the 6400 previously) are hay mowing, tedding and baling and emptying the manure spreader off site. The hay wagons we use are 24' long and hold approximately 270 bales maximum.

LH Ag Mechanics Equipment Spotlight:
John Deere 4710
One of the longest-tenured machines in the program, the 4710 joined us in 2003. At 46 horsepower, it came with 4 wheel drive, hydrostatic transmission (no clutch, no stall!!), turf tires for working on school grounds projects, an easily detachable loader and bucket, and a mid mount mower. Along the way it was joined by a power rake, tiller and the Aeravator, the coolest ground-softener/aerator in the Northern Hemisphere. In the pictures, it is the red implement mounted at the back of the 47. (When a machine has been here long enough and is popular, you can shorten its name like that.) Also in the pictures, you'll see the Ford 1520 that the 47 mercifully replaced.

LH Ag Mechanics Equipment Spotlight: Zero Turn Mowers
As ag mechanics started leaning towards landscape construction and maintenance, we got our first zero turn mower in 2001. Behold, the Howard Price 360Z! As enrollment grew, we traded in the HP in 2004 and upgraded to two zero turns to accommodate more students. The new machines were identical ExMark Lazer Z models with diesel engines. The ExMarks stayed for ten years and in 2014 were traded in for two S**G Tiger Cats. Students wondered why we didn't get the Cheetah, but the name alone ought to tell you.... The S**G's were so good that some students thought they walked on water. See picture # 10. Finally, in 2023 we went from orange to green and got the John Deere Z920M. Try saying that ten times fast in class...

Equipment Spotlight: Skid Steers. Our first skid steer, the John Deere 250, was with us for 20 years. It was rated at 61 horsepower and came with a backhoe, forks, power rake and bucket. In the photos, the 250 is the one with the yellow backhoe. (or the big 250 sticker on the side, I suppose) In August of 2020, we traded it in for a new model, the JD 320. Rated at 69 horsepower, the 320 also came with a backhoe (black in the photos) but we kept the original forks and bucket because they fit. Both machines have been very useful in training student operators as well as projects around school and at the hay field.
