It seems like a great day to mention that there IS a way to donate to Walled Lake Schools that directly supports staff and students... and that is through the FFE.

Last year, we gave back $59,975 to 81 staff members in the district to support tools and resources for students. Our goal is to put more money in the hands of teachers who can use it to improve educational outcomes in our district.

So if you've been chatting with people about wishing there was a way to support teachers directly, there is!

❗This is the last call for Kindergarten Welcome Kits, as orders are due TOMORROW (Wed, June 29th) at midnight. ❗

Apologies if this is the first time you are hearing about this. It's very difficult to find new WLCSD families when they aren't entered into the district system yet. Please share with any WLCSD Kindergarten families you know!

The $35 kits include:
⭐A Grow With Me T-shirt with the student's graduation year (2039 for Kindergarten or 2040 for Junior Kindergarten). Shirt is sized in Adult Large so you can watch your child grow into it.
⭐Yard sign with graduation year and school logo
⭐Info folder with quick reference sheet (phone numbers, bell times, etc), district calendar, PTA information, and first day of school sign)
⭐ Kindergarten-themed book

Kits will be available in mid-August and can be picked up at a home near Keith Elementary (address provided later) or the Educational Services Center in Walled Lake. Delivery within WLCSD boundaries is available for an additional $15.

WOW! What a store! Teacher friends, if you have not checked out the Lakeshore Learning store in Sterling Heights, you NEED to go! It will blow your mind.

A sincere thank you to Regional Manager, Andrew Marsh, and Store Manager, Sheri Chirco, for donating a HUGE amount of classroom items for the FFE to give away at the WLCSD Staff Opening Day Kickoff. There is so much stuff that it took 2 of us to get everything to the car. 😮

Did you know that Lakeshore Learning will work with you to set up a shopping event for you and some coworkers? What a great way to spend a day prepping for the school year. Or, if you have kids to take with you, do some shopping while your kids check out their kids' events. You can find all that info at https://www.lakeshorelearning.com/

As we continue to look through our old files, this one caught our eye.

These are the graduates of 1939 and 1940.
We are currently putting together Kindergarten Welcome Kits for the Classes of 2039 and 2040. 🤯

Now is the time to start prepping your child to be ready for their first day of Kindergarten.

Here are a couple of things we would recommend working on:

1) Take your student to play on the playground at their new school over the summer. It will help familiarize them with the school and make one thing less "scary".

2) Make sure they can use the bathroom independently.... from start to finish (including hand washing)!

3) Spend time teaching them how to open the food items you pack in their lunch. Lunch times aren't super long and if they have to spend time waiting for someone to open their apple slices or juice box they are going to have to rush through their meal to finish it.

4) Prepare your child (and YOU!) for a quick goodbye. Taking a long time to say goodbye before they head into the school just makes it harder on everyone. (Maybe watch a few of those "tuck and roll" videos about school drop-off lines 😏)

5) Make sure they can get their backpack on and off without help. Same goes for coats and shoes.

6) Talk to your kid about being KIND. They will be meeting students from a variety of backgrounds and it's important for them to remember that it's ok to be different. If they see a student standing off by themselves, encourage them to go say hello. Everyone is nervous and sometimes all it takes is someone giving them a chance to join in the fun.
