Standing ovation for Olivia Wiebe ’27, who interned as part of the production crew as Walla Walla Summer Theater returned to the renovated Fort Walla Walla Amphitheater for performances of "Newsies" and "Godspell."

With support from the Whitman Internship Grant, Olivia helped run the soundbooth, assisted in set design, and learned to weld stage scaffolding — truly holding it all together!

What an incredible way to head into the final week of Summer in Seattle!

Our Whitman College students spent an unforgettable evening at T-Mobile Park with the Seattle — a day filled with connection, learning, unique experiences, and plenty of fun.

The afternoon started with a behind-the-scenes ballpark tour, followed by a conversation with Whitman alumni about the business of baseball and professional sports—from communications and events to sports science and business operations, and the many career opportunities that exist beyond the game itself.

And then they got to enjoy some baseball together as the Mariners took on the Detroit !

One of the goals of Summer in Seattle is to help students expand their understanding of professional opportunities by connecting them with alumni, employers, and industries. Experiences like this bring that goal to life.

From the first lump of clay in Beginning Ceramics to immersive environmental experiences including Semester in the West, Cambria Bartlett ’26 learned to combine a wide variety of passions.

This spirit of exploration led her to an Environmental Studies-Art major, with a senior thesis exploring the relationship between water, environmental studies and psychology through the medium of a ceramic installation.

"I was encouraged to follow connections between my interests and end my senior year by creating something that felt entirely my own," she says.

Having graduated in May, Cambria reflects on the fullness of what she learned at Whitman.

"Studying art here hasn’t just made me a better artist. It has changed how I see the world. I pay more attention to details, think more creatively about solving problems, and am more confident in exploring new interdisciplinary ideas. These are skills I will carry with me no matter what career I pursue next. It all started with one class, one professor and one assignment."

Meet Jonathan Sposato '89 — Whitman alum, tech entrepreneur, and now the founder of JoySauce, the first Asian American-centered streaming TV network!

From designing his first video game at 13, to building and selling startups, to launching GeekWire, Sposato's career has been all about bridging tech and storytelling. Now, with JoySauce reaching Amazon Prime and beyond, he's flipping the script on Asian American representation, trading trauma narratives for joy, humor and swagger.

His new show, "JoySauce Late Night," reimagines late-night TV with an entirely Asian American cast, crew, and creative team. Sposato says his goal is simple: he wants a new generation to watch and think, "Wow, these guys are so cool. I want to be like them."

Who do you call when you need passion and persistence? Your Whitman friends, of course.

So when Apple Lieser ’23 learned that a family business had been devastated by floods, she knew exactly who to ask for help in rebuilding.

With a crew of Whitties behind the bar, baking the bread and setting the tables, it was a new start for Dennett’s at the Wharf, which has become not just a seasonal town restaurant and bar, but a vital third space for the community of Castine, Maine.

When Sybella Ssewakiryanga came to Whitman, she was excited but unsure what to expect. As an international student from Uganda with she knew she needed to have an open mind to this new phase of life.

And early in her first year, that attitude led her to joining the Associated Students of Whitman College.

Over her four years Sybella strengthened her leadership and interpersonal skills through numerous roles representing her peers, meeting with administrators and the Board of Trustees, and building lasting friendships.

There are approximately 2,000 braille signs at Whitman, and this summer, Artemis Gilbert ’28 is conducting a comprehensive audit of all of them.

Gilbert is a rising junior double-majoring in Philosophy and Classical Studies (Latin). They are literate in Unified English Braille and are working toward national literary braille transcription certification. They’ve paired that expertise with a close study of the Americans with Disabilities Act’s signage requirements and consultation with the U.S. Access Board for Technical Assistance.

Conducting this research with support from the Division of Inclusive Excellence, Gilbert's findings will give the College Accessibility Committee a comprehensive resource for long-term planning and informing the college's future signage decisions.
