Community Helper month is our favorite! We live in a pretty great community!

It’s been a busy couple of weeks down in our Buds and Blossoms classes. We have had several community helpers come chat with our classes. We had Wade Hicks from the WWFD come and talk to our class about being a fireman. He showed the kids his turnouts and let them see them on. We then had a visit from Nick Klicker, Rich Westphal and Logan Morris from the WWPD. Nick brought his K-9 partner Daze to show the kids. The kids also got to take a look inside one of the cars. Next was Jason Cobb from J & J snacks. He told us about how J & J snacks manufacturers many different snacks that the kids recognized. They got to try some strawberry churros, some cookies that Costco sales, Walmart brand Twist and Shouts and some teddy grahams. All the snacks were greatly enjoyed! Zach Sanchez from the US Forest Service- Umatilla National Forest finished last week up. He came and talked to us about taking care of our forests and Smokey Bear. He brought a lot of tools that he uses for the kids to check out. Today we had Camron Clark come and talk to us about College Place Public Works. He talked to us about maintaining the streets, the water we brush our teeth with, storm water, and the parks. Phew!!! We’ve got a lot of busy parents with some really cool jobs. Thank you to WWFD, WWPD, J&J Snacks, The U.S. National forest service and City of College Place for letting us borrow these dads to tell us about their jobs!

Every year our Buds and Blossoms classes do a unit on Community helpers. We invite our parents to come talk to our two classes and every year our kids love it! This week we started out with Chef Rock from East Alder Table. He talked to the kids about herbs and let the kids touch, smell and taste (if they wanted to) the different herbs that he brought. Logan Hoeft came and talked to us about farming. He brought in a toy combine and some wheat that he let the kids check out. We talked about some of the crops that he grows. We reminded the kids about the day (earlier this year) that we had popped some popcorn that was still on the ear of corn and explained to the kids that Logan had grown that popcorn. We finished our week with County Commissioner Bertha Clayton coming in to talk to us about rules and elections. She held an election where the kids voted on whether or not they wanted a piece of chocolate or a gummy bear for a treat. The chocolate narrowly won the election and the kids got to have a piece of chocolate. Thank you to Rock Silva, Logan Hoeft and Bertha Clayton for taking the time to come in and talk to our classes.

Community Helpers continue to come visit our Buds and Blossoms classes. Last week we started the week with Deputy Chief Brandon McKinney bringing a truck and crew from Walla Walla Fire District 4. The kids got to explore the fire truck 🚒 and see Brandon put on his gear. Zach Armijo from Perfection Glass came and talked to us all about windows. We also had Andy Hetterley come from Bennet Locksmith. Each kid got to make their own key to take home.

Fall registration is now underway. This evening, we host our Spring Open House and Registration event from 6-7:30pm. We look forward to welcoming you for a tour.

Our favorite part of the year in the Buds and Blossoms class is when we talk about Community Helpers! This year is no exception to the fun. Every year we invite parents of our classes to come in and talk about their job and it’s always one of the funnest things we do! This week we had Travis Johnston from Providence St Mary’s come talk to us. He talked to us about X-rays, scans and ultrasounds. We even got to see some cool pictures showing us broken bones! Evan Rowley also works at St Mary’s and talked to us about pain management and how he makes people feel better. We even got to see Ayezley get her reflexes checked! We rounded out the week with Chef Rock Silva. He talked to us about cooking and brought in fresh and dried herbs for the kids to see, touch, smell and see how the fresh herb was different from its dried version. The kids loved getting to squish them! He taught us about the different dishes that each herb was good on. All in all a fantastic start to a month of learning about community helpers! Thank you so much for coming and talking to our classes!
