The Maxey Museum at Whitman College

The Maxey Museum at Whitman College The Maxey Museum is Whitman College's museum of northwest history. Admission is free and tours are available upon request.

Since 1899, the Maxey Museum has been providing an opportunity for Whitman students to make history come alive. All exhibits are designed and created by students under the direction of Exhibitions and Collections Manager Brynne Haug. The museum is located in the auditorium building of Maxey Hall next to the Environmental Studies wing.

We invite you to visit the new Sheehan Gallery Exhibition, 'PICTURING FAMILY: Métis Life in the Walla Walla Valley'

'Picturing Family' combines family photos of the Métis (mixed Indigenous and French Canadian) population of the Umatilla Indian Reservation at the turn of the 20th century with contemporary art made and collected by descendants of these same families at the turn of the 21st century. We invite you to discover these family communities, and the narrative and creative practices that sustain them.

The show will run 9/3/24 - 12/6/24 and our Opening Event will feature a Panel Discussion on Friday, September 13th at 4:00pm in Olin Auditorium on Whitman College campus, with a Reception in the Gallery to follow.

Visit two new displays curated by the Maxey Museum and the Sheehan Gallery in honor of the first Pášx̣apa Powwow at Whitman College!

On the ground floor of Maxey Hall, Traces Interwoven: Reflecting on Whitman’s Historical Collections will give you a glimpse into the inner workings of the Maxey Museum and show you selections from Whitman College’s historical collections of objects by Indigenous makers from the Northwest. In the foyer of Maxey West, Time Intertwined: Works from the Columbia River Plateau showcases pieces by artists past and present with a close connection to the Columbia Plateau, working within and beyond traditional media.

Efforts towards repatriation of objects of cultural patrimony and sacred objects are ongoing, and we welcome consultation with Tribal partners. If you see anything on display here that you would like to discuss further, or if you would like to gain access to these collections, please contact Maxey Museum Exhibition and Collections Manager Libby Miller at [email protected] or Sheehan Gallery Director Kynde Kiefel at [email protected].

In it, you’ll see objects from Whitman’s collections chosen for their formal, narrative, or conceptual resonances with the work by faculty and staff on display in time | creature | portal | self.
* entrance to Maxey West is through the back, near the tennis courts. This exhibition is free and open to the public.
