It has been a joy celebrating the arrival of both new and returning students, faculty, and staff as we embark on this exciting next chapter together at Whitman College - - here in Pášx̣apa, “the place of the wild sunflowers. 🌻

Pronounced "koosh", ["oo" as in food"]


Honoring the wisdom and environmental stewardship of the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation, the CTUIR, we share this post and video to share our culture and teaching that kúus (water) is life. It is kúus (water) that leads our First Foods chain. It is kúus (water) that protects the balance of our ecosystem.

We, as titóqin (people), speak for the fish, wildlife, and future generations when we speak up for and protect our waterways.

On Friday, July 14, a delegation of Whitman College met with the CTUIR Board of Trustees at the Nixyaawii Governance Center for our annual MOA Performance Review. We are grateful for the ongoing partnership, continued growth in our relationship, and progress made toward our shared goals related to higher education between the CTUIR and Whitman College.

Due to poor air quality from local wildfires, the annual CTUIR/Whitman Women's Lacrosse Clinic was postponed. Here is the most recent clinic poster with the new dates.

This collaboration between CTUIR YTHC staff and Whitman College women's lacrosse program celebrates the deep Indigenous roots of the sport by connecting our Whitman Women's Lacrosse players with local youth through the shared experience of the Creator's Game.

Honoring indigenous roots, continuing to help build strong, long-term relational bonds between Whitman athletics and the CTUIR community.

My son, Šináata Scholar Joel Satterwhite, who is the 7th great-grandson of Tiwíiteqis Old Chief Joseph, will receive his Indian name this Saturday at 9 AM in the arbor at the Nez Perce Wallowa Homeland site.

himaqis qeci'yew'yew to all who are helping with Joel's naming ceremony: Martina Gordon, Fred Hill, Tommy Pierre, Robert Wilson, and Malvin Jamison/Rocky Ridge Drum.

Thank you to my sisters and brother for helping with bringing some food items to feed those in attendance: Martina, Pam, Kathleen, and thank you, Bobby for bringing kúus (water).

Thank you to Michelle Burke for making a beautiful set of leggings and hider for Joel to give away.

Thankful for Whitman College staff and students who attended the Tribal, State, and Federal Summit “Beyond Policy: Shaping Behavior and Culture” sponsored by the CTUIR Family Violence Services Program. The sessions and time spent together throughout the summit will benefit each of us individually and collectively as a whole in many ways now and into the future. ❤️🪶
