Walla Walla Valley Farm to School WWVF2S is working to inspire healthy communities through food, farm, and garden experience!

There are several school gardens in Walla Walla, created and maintained by parent volunteers, school teachers and community members. Each garden is utilized differently depending on volunteer impetus, and teacher interest and availability. It is our shared vision that the garden will link food, culture, health and the environment through hands-on experience. Growing and preparing food is a powerfu

l way for children to discover that healthy food tastes good, and to learn about the cycles, seasons, and other processes of nature. School gardens are an effective and fun way to promote cooking and eating nutritious foods.

Our service day with College Place High School at the Green Park Elementary School garden was a SUCCESS! 🌱🙌

Our Garden Education Manager, Dig It With Nathan is always incredible at teaching, working right alongside our volunteers, and keeping us laughing along the way. 😂

There’s no shortage of projects to tackle in our school gardens, and we’re so grateful for the students, teachers, and community members who show up and lend a hand. 💚

We couldn’t do it without our amazing volunteers. 🌻

What's your favorite tomato growing trick? At the Green Park Elementary garden, we're trying the "Lower and Lean" method of trellising our tomatoes this year, and it's going great! This method makes the fruit easier for kids to pick, allows more air circulation between plants, and helps save space. 🍅

Students in the Athena YMCA Club recently turned POTATOES into batteries! 🥔🪫 We tested how many potatoes it takes to power a led light bulb, a digital clock, and a buzzer. We also tried connecting 30 potatoes to try to power a fan... we couldn't quite get that one to work, but regardless, it was an AMPS-olutely positive experience! (And if you're wondering: Gardener Corey planted the potatoes afterward so they didn't go to waste!)

Here's one last look back at the fun we had with our 21st Century Learning programming in Walla Walla earlier this summer! We had a blast using flowers from the garden to make our own stained glass windows—AND we snuck in a little learning by exploring why flower petals are usually a different color than the rest of the plant. We think the student's petal projects came out great! 🌸

Students in the YMCA summer program in Milton-Freewater have continued to have a great time exploring the Freewater Elementary garden! We picked strawberries and cherry tomatoes to snack on, gave the plants a drink, and investigated a worm composting bin to see decomposers up close. Summer is meant for getting hands dirty outside! 🙌

Here's a look back at one of our favorite lessons from our summer 21st Century Learning programming! We learned about how birds can be helpful to the garden and a bit about how they fly. We made bird (and squirrel!) feeders out of unused pots and hung them around the garden, and we also examined the varying wing patterns of different birds and how they help that particular bird navigate their environment. We made our own birds using different wing designs, and even got to give them a test flight! 🪶
