SDOC Update on Community Tragedy
Good afternoon,
I want to make you aware of a tragic situation that occurred in our community earlier today.
At approximately 10:00 a.m. this morning, we learned of a shooting involving two teenagers in the Walhalla area. As a result of this tragedy, one teen was transported to a regional hospital, where he later passed away.
Given the nature of this tragedy and the ages of the individuals involved, we are partnering with local law enforcement to assist with their investigation and are limited in the information we are able to share at this time. We can confirm that the individuals involved have a connection to our schools as a combination of current and former students.
We recognize that a tragedy of this nature affects our entire school community—students, staff members, and families. We will work closely with school leaders, teachers, counselors, and community partners to provide support to those who may need assistance processing this difficult event.
To support our school community, counseling and crisis support will be available at impacted schools when students return on Tuesday, October 13.
In the meantime, we encourage parents and caregivers to talk with their children, listen to their concerns, and provide reassurance as they process the information and emotions associated with grief and loss. Parents who need assistance supporting their children are encouraged to reach out to their child’s school, a health professional, or another trusted support network.
Our thoughts are with the families and all those impacted by this heartbreaking tragedy. We will continue to support our students, staff, and families throughout this difficult time.
Thank you for your continued partnership and support of our school community.
Andy Smith, Superintendent of School District of Oconee County
