Leadership doesn’t come with a script. Sometimes it starts with walking into a room where you’re the newest person, the youngest voice, or the one wondering if you truly belong.

In this clip, former Penn State University Drum Major Ellie Sheehan shares a simple reminder that every young leader needs to hear: Just be yourself!

The qualities that got you into the room are the same ones that will help you grow in it. You don’t have to change who you are to lead with confidence. Your authenticity is your greatest strength.

Before the night ends, we had to pause and celebrate. Today marks 18 years since Athena was founded on August 3, 2008. 🎉 What started as a vision to empower young women through music has grown into a movement of clinicians, students, teachers, and communities across the country.

We are grateful for every event, every student, every teacher, every supporter, and every ‘aha’ moment along the way.

Sometimes, all it takes is one sentence.

“You’d make a good jazz player.”

For this Athena participant, those words meant everything. She had always dreamed of playing in a jazz band, and hearing an Athena teacher say those words gave her the confidence to believe it could actually happen. 💕

You never know how much your encouragement can change someone’s path. At Athena, we believe in seeing potential, speaking it out loud, and helping students become the musicians and leaders they’re meant to be.

Each Athena Summit is designed for musicians and music educators at every stage of their journey.

MIDDLE & HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS
will experience workshops that will improve leadership skills, musicianship, confidence, and personal growth.

COLLEGE STUDENTS & BAND DIRECTORS will experience professional development sessions to improve confidence on the podium, teaching leadership skills from the podium, developing well-rounded percussionists during your warm ups, and instrument repair tips and tricks!

Our campers spent the week learning, rehearsing, and bringing this music to life. Then, just when they thought that was all, they were surprised by the composer HERself!‼️

The smiles, the excitement, the conversations, and the memories that followed reminded us why music is so much more than notes on a page. It connects people in unforgettable ways.

Thank you, Laura Fleet Estes for making this year’s Summer Camp one our young ladies will always remember. 🎉
