KM Perform emphasizes hands-on-learning, providing a highly relevant stage for production and expression of student learning. Through authentic performances, students will engage in a rigorous academic curriculum and graduate prepared to achieve in college and a competitive workforce that demands creativity and collaboration. The daily schedule of a KM Perform student combines components of a traditional class schedule with large blocks of time for students to work collaboratively in the arts, sciences, and humanities. Instruction is delivered via seminar, workshops, and field experiences, infusing an arts-based curriculum across all content areas. History and English requirements will be demonstrated through a written, musical, dramatic, or visual arts-based performance. Math and science curriculum will engage students in scientific concepts through visual and performing arts, often with structural projects such as sculpture, 2D drawings, or physics of music demonstrations. This challenging academic curriculum offers students the choice to take a wide range of courses (including Advanced Placement) in all subject areas.

Take a look at these incredible instruments created in a KM Perform Applied Mathematical Design (AMD) seminar, where students explored the intersection of acoustics, physics, culture, and instrument design. To bring their instrument to life, students used precise mathematical calculations and researched specific equations to ensure their builds were scientifically sound. Many even conducted tests on their final builds to see how modifying certain features would impact things like frequency, decibel level, or overtones. Beyond the technical work, students researched global musical traditions to inform their choice of materials and decorations. These pictures feature some of the finished projects; including an Alphorn, canoe oar bass, banjos, tuned water glasses, fishing line string instruments, and percussion instruments designed to resemble West African and South American instruments.

Something is always happening at KMP!

Jake Zuehl, a Master Naturalist from Landscapes for the Future, has joined our KM Perform Ecology in Action seminar as a Guest Artist. Over the next few weeks, he’ll be working with our 9th graders to unlock the secrets of the ecosystems right here on campus. Throughout the seminar, students will be analyzing aerial maps to see how land development impacts native plants, testing soil samples from various campus locations to sprout "hidden" seeds, and cultivating fungi. We recently kicked things off by collecting soil samples to see what’s hiding underground. So far, the microscopes have revealed a hidden world of teeny worms and tiny spiders!
