According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, about 44 percent of all workers are self-employed. The earning potential, says BLS, for hairstylists, hairdressers and cosmetologists in the top 10 percent of all earners in the nation average over $20.41 per hour.

If you enjoy helping people look more beautiful, a cosmetology career may be the right choice for you. Cosmetology encompasses a wide variety of careers, including hair stylists and nail technicians.

You'll have to compete with other cosmetologists for a job, but the industry is growing. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics in 2010, jobs in cosmetology are expected to grow at a rate of 16 percent between 2010 and 2020.
