“During a team meeting for Gary, the team discussed how we had heard glimpses of his voice. The house manager said he likes picture flashcards. On a shopping trip, we picked him up some for the center. He vocally said each word. We were all so excited to hear his voice. Some of the pictures were hard to identify. That's when we discovered Gary can read. He was hesitant at first, but l remembered he has a love for pens. So I decided to use that to help encourage him to use his voice. We work on this every day. Gary now comes into my office to use his voice. We have gone from picture flashcards to me writing on a whiteboard, to having him read affirmations about his awesome voice, to sitting at the lunch table talking. We are still going to work on this daily because his favorite thing to say is, "I want a pen," but my favorite thing he says is, "Hi Sue." I'm hoping Gary realizes he has a voice and his voice needs to be heard.
We are so very proud of Gary and his growth in just a few months and are excited to see him comfortable using his VOICE.
We love you, Gare Bear!”🐻
Love, Sue❤️
This picture is such a perfect example. Sue has been working with Gary to find his voice, build confidence, and feel comfortable speaking up. She believes in him and keeps encouraging him until he believes in himself, too. Sue works HARD. She gives so much of herself to the people we support and makes sure everyone has the opportunity to be heard, grow, and shine in their own way.
Happy 12-Year Work Anniversary, Sue! We are so lucky to have you and so grateful for everything you bring to RSC. We love you even more!🥰
