👩‍🏫 Meet the Team: BCBA

A BCBA (Board Certified Behavior Analyst) plays a big role in ABA therapy—they’re the brains behind the treatment plan 🧠✨

Here’s what they do 👇

A BCBA assesses behavior by observing the child or client, collecting data, and figuring out why certain behaviors happen 📊🔍. They look at strengths, challenges, and what motivates the person.

They design individualized treatment plans tailored to the client’s needs and goals 🎯📝. This can include building communication skills 🗣️, improving social skills 🤝, increasing independence, and reducing challenging behaviors in a positive way 🌱

BCBAs train and supervise behavior technicians (RBTs) 👩‍🏫👨‍🏫. They make sure therapy is being done correctly, ethically, and effectively by modeling strategies and giving feedback.
They analyze data regularly to see what’s working and what needs to change 📈📉. If progress slows, the BCBA adjusts the plan to keep things moving forward 🚀

BCBAs also collaborate with families, teachers, and other professionals 🤝🏫. They provide parent training, answer questions, and help skills carry over into everyday life 🏡❤️

Overall, a BCBA’s goal is to help clients learn meaningful skills, increase independence, and improve quality of life—using evidence-based, compassionate care 💙🌟

💬 What Does “Behavior = Communication” Mean?

When we say behavior equals communication, we mean that every behavior is a way a person expresses a need, feeling, or thought—especially when words are hard to use.

Children may use behavior to say:

* “I need help”
* “This is too hard”
* “I want attention”
* “I’m overwhelmed”
* “I need a break”

Instead of asking “How do we stop this behavior?” we ask:
👉 “What is this behavior trying to tell us?”

In ABA, our goal is to:

* Understand the message behind the behavior
* Teach a more appropriate, effective way to communicate that message

When communication improves, challenging behaviors often decrease 💙

Winter storm blues, anyone? ❄️ Being stuck inside can make the days feel long, but it’s also the perfect excuse to get a little creative at home.

If you’re looking for something fun (and low-stress) to do, try making taste-friendly edible play-dough with the kids or honestly, just for fun. 🙃 The best part? It’s made with just TWO ingredients you may already have in your kitchen. Easy, squishy, and no worries if little hands sneak a taste.

Stay warm, stay safe, and turn a wintery day indoors into a fun memory! ⛄🎨

🧩What an RBT Is

An RBT is a paraprofessional who works directly with individuals (most often children) receiving Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy, typically for autism and other developmental or behavioral challenges. RBTs are certified through the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) and must work under the supervision of a BCBA (Board Certified Behavior Analyst) or BCaBA.

🧩What an RBT Does

RBTs are responsible for implementing behavior intervention plans—not creating them. Their main duties include:

* Providing 1:1 therapy sessions using ABA techniques
* Teaching skills (communication, social, academic, daily living skills)
* Reducing challenging behaviors using evidence-based strategies
* Collecting detailed data on behavior and skill progress
* Following treatment plans written by a BCBA
* Communicating with supervisors and caregivers about progress
* Maintaining ethical and professional standards

What Is ABA Therapy and How Does It Work?

The Core Idea Behind ABA

ABA is based on the idea that behavior is a form of communication and that behaviors are influenced by the environment. Instead of asking, “How do we stop this behavior?” ABA asks:
👉 “Why is this behavior happening, and what skill can we teach instead?”

ABA focuses on increasing helpful behaviors (like communication, social skills, self-care, and learning skills) and reducing behaviors that interfere with learning or safety, always by teaching alternatives—not through punishment.

---
How ABA Therapy Works

1. Assessment & Individualized Plan
A Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) assesses the child’s strengths, needs, interests, and challenges. Based on this, they create a personalized treatment plan with clear goals that are meaningful to the child and family.

2. Breaking Skills Into Steps
Complex skills (like asking for help, brushing teeth, or playing with peers) are broken into small, teachable steps, making learning more manageable and less overwhelming.

3. Teaching Through Practice
Skills are taught through repetition, modeling, and guided practice in structured settings and natural environments (home, school, community).

4. Positive Reinforcement
When a child uses a skill successfully, they receive positive reinforcement—something motivating to them (praise, a favorite toy, a break, or an activity). This helps the child understand that using the skill is beneficial and worth repeating.

5. Data-Driven Progress
Therapists collect data to track progress and adjust strategies. This ensures therapy is effective and tailored to the child’s growth.

6. Generalization of Skills
A key goal of ABA is helping children use skills across settings and with different people, not just during therapy sessions.

---

What Skills Can ABA Help With?

ABA can support a wide range of skills, including:

* Communication (verbal, nonverbal, or using AAC)
* Social skills and play
* Daily living skills (dressing, toileting, eating)
* Emotional regulation and coping skills
* Academic and learning readiness
* Reducing unsafe or harmful behaviors

---

What ABA Is *Not*

* ABA is not about forcing children to be “normal.”
* It is not about punishment or compliance at all costs.
* Modern, ethical ABA emphasizes respect, consent, choice, and the child’s well-being.

Quality ABA therapy is child-centered, strengths-based, and focused on helping children thrive as their authentic selves.
