What are your plans after high school?
My plans are to get financially ready for adulthood, and later on, I plan on going to a 2 or 4-year community college.

What advice would you give to younger students?
Never stop trying, and keep your head up during hard situations.

This week’s Ojibwe Word of the Day is all about kindness and good manners.

Word of the Day: Please

In Ojibwe, “please” is often expressed as “daga” or included through the tone and respect in how something is said. Ojibwe is a language that carries relationship and respect in every word, so saying “please” is not just about the word itself, it is about how you show care for others.

Try it out today. Ask for something kindly, help someone out, or add a little extra respect into your conversations. A simple “please” can go a long way and in Ojibwe culture, that spirit of respect is everything.

Challenge of the day: Use “please” three times today and notice how it changes the moment.

Kind words. Strong community. That is the Ojibwe way.

One of the most well known traditional Ojibwe games is the moccasin game. It’s a game of teamwork, focus, and intuition. Small objects are hidden under a row of moccasins while the other team tries to guess where they are. But it’s not just guessing. It’s reading energy, watching movement, listening closely, and staying grounded. There’s often singing, drumming, and rhythm involved, which adds another layer of connection and intensity.

The moccasin game has always been about more than play. It brings people together, sharpens the mind, and carries tradition forward through each round.

We’re carrying that same energy into our game night this Wednesday with Nashke Games. Tony Drews will be in attendance with this and may more games. Come and enjoy good people, some laughs, and a chance to just be present and connect. Come hang out. Everyone’s welcome.

Wild bergamot, also known as bee balm, is a powerful native plant that has been used for generations by Indigenous communities for both food and medicinal purposes. It can be brewed into a tea that supports wellness during colds and illness, and it plays a vital role in supporting pollinators like bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. This single plant is a reminder of the deep relationship between land, health, and traditional knowledge that continues to this day.

Students will get the chance to explore plants like wild bergamot during our upcoming Native Walk Field Trip, where they will learn how native ecosystems are connected to culture, history, and everyday life.

We are excited to continue our Ojibwe Word of the Week series!

This week’s phrase is “Gigawabamin” – “I will see you.”

In this video, Misty Peterson, American Indian Program Cultural Liaison, shares the pronunciation and meaning to help us learn together.

“I will see you” is more than just a goodbye, it reflects connection, respect, and the intention of seeing one another again.

We invite you to follow along, practice, and continue learning with us as we keep the Ojibwe language strong in our community.
