Have you seen Coffee Leaf Rust while out hiking?

The feral coffee trees growing wild in the Makiki/Manoa hiking area are heavily infected with coffee leaf rust (CLR). 80-90% of the leaves are infected. If you go hiking in that area, please make sure to disinfect your clothes, shoes, hats, backpack, water jugs, etc. before leaving the area. WE all can help slow the spread of this fungus which is devastating the coffee crops in Hawaii.

We recently were able to help Kailua Intermediate School 7th graders with a project where they learned about koa and then proceeded to actually germinate koa seedlings. With the donation of seed the students were able to try different methods of scarifying the seed and now they have little keiki koa to take care of until they're big enough to be outplanted with the help of DLNR

It’s not all hard work going on in the fields, sometimes there’s a little play too
