This little Cuban tree frog made a meal out of a Christmas light in southern Florida. Photographer James Snyder found this little guy in his back yard and initially thought he was dead. After taking a couple photos, Snyder was able to safely pull the light out of the frog, though he reports that the frog didn’t seem happy about it.

Recognizing the western Santa Cruz tortoise as a new species could help promote efforts to protect them – especially with their smaller range, lower numbers, and lower genetic diversity.

The pair, sent to Oakland from zoos in Cleveland and Montreal, produced hundreds of tiny tadpoles; on Wednesday, nine days after hatching, about 200 of them were swimming and wriggling around in a tank at the Oakland Zoo's Biodviersity Center. On Oct. 22, they should all be swimming in a big plastic bag aboard a FedEx airplane bound for San Juan, Puerto Rico.

The plan is for all the tadpoles from Oakland, Buffalo, Omaha and New York City to arrive the same day, and for University of Puerto Rico researchers to then take them to the protected ponds for release.

To help save toads from extinction, four zoos used an elaborate rhythm method, created ideal mating conditions and coordinated efforts to release them into the wild.

The creature is a critically endangered hawksbill sea turtle, and until this sighting last July, the phenomenon had never been documented in turtles, let alone any other reptile.

Biofluorescence is the ability for an organism to reflect blue light and re-emit it as a different color, not to be confused with bioluminescence, where organisms produce their own light.

The tiny lizards are known as “Draco volans,” and over the course of thousands of years, they developed an amazing way to evade predators: Flight.

Their small, wing-like appendages allow them to soar from tree to tree in order to escape from predators, find insects, and attract potential mates. Ultimately, they have the ability to soar more than 30 feet (about 9 meters) in one go.
