ʻāina

n. Land, earth. Cf. ʻai, to eat; ʻaina, kamaʻāina.
Ua mau ke ea o ka ʻāina i ka pono (motto of Hawaiʻi), the life of the land is preserved in righteousness.

This is ʻāina-based education.

During the first semester we began our mālama ʻāina (zero waste) initiative, diverting recyclable and compostable materials from the landfill. Daily lunch scraps fed our pig. And food waste from students homes composted to grow soil for our school garden.

In celebration of Makahiki and the return of life-giving rains of Lono, we harvested our pua'a, ulu, kalo and 'uala in tribute. The cycle of life continues in perpetual abundance when we are are of collective right action.
