One of my favorites

Excerpt - "Conversations With the Master: Masatoshi Nakayama" (Randall G. Hassell, 1983)

HASSELL: Finally, Sensei, if you were permitted time to say only one thing to the people who are training in JKA karate today, both students and instructors, what would you say to them?

NAKAYAMA: I would tell them to meditate on the words of Anton Geesink, the Dutchman who defeated the Japanese and won the World Judo Championship. Geesink faced and defeated every major Japanese judo competitor, and he shook the very foundations of martial arts in Japan. It was just unthinkable that a young European could so skillfully and cleanly destroy the Japanese masters in their own art. But that is exactly what he did.

I remember that the leaders of judo and even some other martial arts in Japan were in a tremendous uproar, and they made elaborate and detailed plans to study Geesink's "secrets" of competition. Ultimately, they arranged for a Japanese journalist to interview Geesink in depth to try to discover the training methods this man had used to defeat the Japanese. Geesink's answer was perhaps the most important statement I have heard in all my years in karate-do, and I will never forget it.

He said: "The Japanese have devoted themselves to the study of judo for competition. They have gone to lengths to develop winning contestants and fine champions. I, on the other hand, have never trained for competition in my life. All I have ever done is trained in judo as a way of life, exactly as Dr. Kano taught. While the Japanese were devising competitive strategies, I was in the dojo, practicing basics and kata.

I defeated the Japanese because I know judo better than the Japanese. The "secret" is to train every day in the basics. This will make you unbeatable."

Congratulations are in order for one of our Waikoloa Karate Academy students. Ava Vaughn has earned her black belt with Shotokan Karate International Federation (SKIF).
The exam was held on Oahu March 9th, and the examiner was Nobuaki Kanazawa, Kancho (chief instructor) from Japan. This is a significant accomplishment for Ava as she has dedicated herself to her training conscientiously for six years. This shodan ranking (1st degree black belt) is an international ranking and will be recognized in SKIF dojo (schools) in over 100 countries.

Well Ava and I just got back from our Maine vacation and it was awesome. Maine, in the summer, is a most charming state with beautiful scenery everywhere. The highlight of our trip for me, was a reunion of Shotokan Karate Academy – Topsham, Maine. Over fifty people came by to say hello and it was heartwarming to reconnect with so many old dojo mates.
I founded Shotokan Karate Academy in 1995 and taught the classes for 22 years. It was my honor to be acquainted with hundreds of fine Maine families and students over that time. Some trained for fifteen weeks and some trained for fifteen years. Six years ago, Ava and I scored one-way tickets to the Big Island and we have been stuck out in the middle of the Pacific ever since.
Many of the young adults in this picture (in fact all of them) were elementary school kids when they initially enrolled in karate. Now they are bigger (and smarter) than me. 2023 is my 49th year in the dojo. I still work out every day, and while punches and blocks are just fine, my greatest reward is the very fine people I have befriended over the decades.

Well, we had to weather a grueling plane flight from Kona to Honolulu (46 minutes) but this crew is tough. The Waikoloa Karate Academy has what it takes, and all had a great time training under Kanazawa Kancho and Satsukawa Sensei from Japan.

Waikoloa Karate Academy is proud to announce two recent promotions to 1st degree black belt (shodan). Aaron Edstrom and Heidi Roxburgh-Edstrom have dedicated themselves to their training for five years to earn this honor. The exam was held on Oahu March 4, 2023. Aaron & Heidi successfully passed the exam under Nobuaki Kanazawa, Kancho, chief instructor of Shotokan Karate International Federation. This accomplishment was a result of near 100% class attendance year after year. This honor was well deserved – kudos!
